I haven't ever had a digital camera before, but I really want to try it. I would like to take pictures at a very close (macro) zoom and print them out with high quality at a large size (16 x 20, maybe? Definitely larger than 8 x 10.) I also would like to take landscape shots.

So what should I look for in the description of the camera? What wording describes what I am talking about? Any specific recommendations are also welcome! Thank you!

Budget: under $1000
Size doesn't matter
Low light/indoor/action shots

For 16x20 prints you are really going to want 6mp and above. If you are looking for a DSLR I would suggest a Nikon D50 or Canon Rebel XT with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro DX. This is a great, fast, all around lens, but not the best Macro (even thought it says it in the title). To get really nice macro shots I would suggest:
Canon:
Canon 50 f/2.5 Macro
Sigma 50 f/2.8 Macro

Nikon:
Nikkor 60 f/2.8 Macro
Sigma 50 f/2.8 Macro

To Start out you could probably get the D50 w/Sigma 24-70 & Memory Card. This package will probably cost you a little over $1,000. Later you can purchase the macro lens.

Wow, thanks Ken. Such a fast reply!
So if I understand you correctly:
1) A camera at least 6 megapixels will take care of my large prints.
2) I need to buy a camera plus an extra lens to really have nice pictures.
3) For regular shots, you recommend this lens: Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro DX. It will work with both the Canon and Nikon cameras you recommend. I will also need a memory card. I can start out with this package.

4)For macro shots, you recommend one of the other four lenses you mention.

Is that right? I am busy locating the cameras and lenses you mentioned. Thank you so much. Tori

Is it better to spend the entire $1000 on one good camera, and sometime later buy additional lenses, or to buy a cheaper camera and additional lenses up front? Thanks again. Tori

Yes to your first question. Your second question (in my experience) often represents a false economy.
