Hi.. I've been asking a lot of questions about the SD450 and Panasonic DMC-FX9 (or 8) and I know both are 2.5" LCD screens

I've been hearing a lot about how larger LCD screens crack very easily and wanted to know what you guys thought about that, if there are legitimate reasons to avoid large LCD cameras... I would hate for it to crack in the first month of usage... If anyone can give input it would be very appreciated. thank you... this forum has been tremendously helpful so far

also, if you had LCD cracking on your cameras, where were you able to go from there? (repair on your own, warranty, etc??)

Most cracked LCD screen are not repaired under warranty with the exception of the HP Extended Warranty which does cover the LCD screen. The repairs on the Canon SD-500 camera runs about $200.

thanks for the info... the other thing i wanted to know was, if the LCD screens get to 2+ inches, are they susceptible to cracking that easily? i've seen most of the larger screens, and they dont seem easy to crack yet i've been hearing on different forums about this being a big problem... if someone can corroborate or refute

thanks.

I have a 2.5" LCD on my camera (Fuji F10) and have had no problems so far. I do carry the camera in a padded case at all times, though. People who just put their cameras in their pockets may not be so fortunate.

Most of the LCD cracking problems that I've heard about have belonged to the Canon PowerShot SD series. It isn't necessarily a big problem, though. It's just that when problems occur, you're more likely to hear about them. And a LOT of people own Canon PowerShot SD's. People don't usually post to say, "Hey, my LCD is just fine!" Well, at least I don't think they do.

You might want to post your query or do a search in the Canon forum, if you haven't already; you might find more responses there.

You might want to check out Donato777's response in this thread (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16060). He owns a Canon PowerShot SD550, and says that both that camera and the SD450 have stronger LCD's than the previous SD models did.

My Sony H1 has a 2.5" screen, and is very sturdy, hasn't even scratched yet. They use a strong LCD though, so I'm sure it varies from company to company.
