I just saw this lens cap and I wonder if this is the type that will STAY on my camera! I am so frustrated with the one that came with my S2! Does the one here go on like the ones on my Elan lle SLR lenses? It's from LensMate online.
" Plastic Clip-In Lens Cap w/ molded in loop
Available in 52mm and 58mm only. Clip-in style lens cap with molded in loop, comes with custom Canon silver/grey nylon tether. Can be attached to strap eyelet, strap or around adapter."

Clip-in lens caps fit on lens adapters - so your answer is YES and NO. Without the adapter, you have the right cover from Canon. With the adapter, the LensMate 52mm or 58mm (depending on adapter size) would be correct. Hope that clears it up.

Okaaaay...gotcha. How much is an adaptor and how much longer would it make my lens out front? In other words, would it add a lot of bulk to my camera, maybe not fitting into my new little Case Logic bag? Thanks for your reply!

LensMate has the information you need (www.lensmate.com). I don't know if it will still fit into your current bag, you could probably determine that with the specs. I like my lens adapter - it gives me something to hold onto when I am shooting. I also keep a UV filter on there at all times for lens protection and to help with UV - Tampa has LOTS of UV/sun. I also have a polarizing filter that use at times and a telephoto adapter. LensMate products are top quality and very fairly priced, IMO. Hope that gets you going the right direction.
Ciao!
Tampa Jim, Thank you for the info on the lensmate adaptor. I checked out their web site. I have several 52mm and 55mm filters from an old, but loved Minolta SRT-101. One question....if I use the lensmate 52mm and a step up ring 52-55mm, to also use a 55mm polarizer will I have any problems as I use the S2 on full wide angle or full zoom? This is my first post, so pardon any goofy formatting errors for now.

Digital cameras only need a linear polarizer - circular won't make it better. So ... A Hoya DC Linear is only $17.95 - no buying a step ring and nothing is different. If you use the 52mm stuff you have then when/if you buy a telephoto converter and/or wide-angle converter you will buy 52mm, as well, and you would probably want to at times use a polarizer with them. I wouldn't recommend, for example, a 52mm adapter, a converter, a step ring and then a filter - with all of that you could easily suffer from flash shadow, vignetting, ring reflection, etc. due to the hodge-podge configuration. Anyway, that's my two cents worth. LOL

I looked up the adaptors on Lensmate and I have some questions. If I were to get one, I would tend to lean toward the 52. I'm a bit confused how it works, though. Looking at the photo, does it always stick out, but the lens and zoom retract back into the camera like usual? Also, is this really how long it is? It seems longer in the picture. I saw this FAQ question:
1. What's the length of the Lensmate S2 52mm adapter?
1.625" or 41.28mm. Are they saying it's just ONE.625 inches??
If this did tend to always stick out far, is it easy to take off and put on each time I want to use my camera so I can store my camera easier in the bag? I'm still confused about how long this thing is! :-) Sorry--this is all pretty new to me. I confuse easily!! :o

This is sort of what it will look like - it is easy to get off but you will need somewhere to store the adapter.
When the cam is facing you, with the cap OFF and cam OFF,if you grip the ring on the end of the lens and press the small button to the left of the lens housing base and twist the ring left - the bayonet will be revealed. This is what you mount the adapter onto.

@TampaJim
Hi, can you please elaborate on what you mean about digicams not benifiting from a circular polarizer?
I just bought a Tiffen circular polarizer for my Canon S2IS and I spend quite a bit on it.. I didn't even know there were "linear" polarizers? How do these differ from circular ones?
I haven't rea;;y had the chance to try out the polarizer yet, I'm not really even sure what it does, LOL.
Thanks

A polarizing filter works just like polarized sunglasses. They reduce glare and allow you to see water, sand, sky, etc. properly.
The reason that circular filters are no better than the cheaper linear filters on digital P&S cameras is simple - no mirror. However, here is a link to explain how each work, from a pseudo-technical standpoint.

I hope you just went in and asked for one without telling them what you were going to do with it. If the salesperson knew, take it back and slap them at the same time!
Now, I will say this - some of the circular filters have a more advanced coating process. This is why some digital P&S folks, still buy the more expensive filters. I don't and don't recommend that people do - it is a waste of money, IMO. I LOVE my S2, I think it is a wonderful camera - but I also realize that buying a $52 circular versus a $18 linear is overkill.

Ah.. well, I guess i wasted my money then..
I just walked into the store and grabbed the first 58 mm polarizer i saw(a tiffen circular one, about $55) (i have the Canon adapter) since I thought they were all the same anyway.
Oh well..
But will it adversely affect photos if I have a circular one inestad of a linear one? Or is it the same? Just that I spent more $$ on it?
Thanks.

It will work the same - you just spent considerably more money than necessary. But at least now you know and can save someone else from doing the same - hopefully.

Many thanks for the photo, I was confused about sizing as well and your photo cleared it up nicely.
