D-40 battery problems

I have a D-40 which seems to have developed a battery problem... It burns through batteries like crazy, especially regular alkaline ones... I am using 2300 NiMh ones but they don't last long either... I have turned off the display as I know that this drains batteries..

DOes anyone know of any problems that this might be related to? Could it be a faulty battery sensor in the camera?
