View Full Version : Apology for recent server problems

Over the last month or two we've had some major server performance problems. In the forums you'll usually get a database error when this happens. What's going on here is that the server is running out of memory due to all the hits to the web server (Apache). When that happens, everything comes to a grinding haul, most notably the database.

I will be having the memory in the server updated ASAP, so hopefully these problems will come to an end.

Thanks,

I know how that is Jeff. Once I started hosting my Path Valley Speedway photos on my cheap paid host's server, I got so darn many hits, my old host cancelled my account without warning & I had to scramble to switch to another host altogether. Talk about crunch time. I'm paying 12x the monthly fees but they're geared towards businesses and said they'll never shut me down like my other host would do. Mine runs on Apache and SQL as well (oscommerce).

I haven't experienced too many outages on your end. 2-3 maybe in the past month or so. I just shrug it off and try later. I guess because I'm used to it from my own end. lol.

Jeff,

I think most of us here understand and just wait it out patiently. No apology is necessary. We all owe you a debt of gratitude for giving us this wonderful site where we can get good information, learn a thing or two, show off our photos, and mostly, find good friends with like interests.

Thank you!!

Have you considered doing your own hosting?

Sure, I've thought about it. But running an OC-12 line into my house would not be cheap :)

Why an OC-12 line? Why not use RF communications instead?

In fact, why don't you just move to the data centre - I'm sure they wouldn't mind the tent, although the BBQ might be a problem :D ...

But in all serious, thanks for running the site, providing invaluable information, and hosting a lively and helpful community of photographs, all for free - it's invaluable.

Funny: A friend in Huntington Beach, CA has fiber to his house. 15mb for about $80 a month. He was asking what ever would he could use the speed for.

It's an trial where several cities were chosen nation wide for fiber to the home.

Ummm, to use a Dan Quailish quote ... "The future is coming".

There will be a bit of downtime later tonight while the server's memory is doubled. I hope this will end the problems we've been having around here lately!

Not a problem. Some of us can use the down time to actually take some pictures.

As always many thanks for the site.

I think that those of us who use this site on a daily basis should help defray some of the costs that Jeff incurs to keep it going for us. I just made a small donation (wish is were more Jeff) and hope others will consider doing the same.

There's a donation link (thru paypal) at: http://www.dcresource.com/about/about-dcrp.html

The donation icon is way down at the bottom of the page.

Jeff, again I thank you for everything you do for us.

It's probably just my crap DSL line, but every now and then I have to hit the "Go" or "Reload" button on my browser because the forum pages will hang up. It's not often but its wierd. Haven't experienced it on any other sites though.

I'm on Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 on Windows XP Home if it makes a difference.

PS: I'm not asking anyone to rush around and look into it...I just figured I'd bring it up finally.

Jeff, thanks very much for the upgrade. The boards work a lot better.
