UV Filter for Panasonic FZ20

I just purchsed a new FZ20 and discovered that the Panasonic UV protective filter only attaches to the lens hood adaptor. I was planning to use the camera on most occasions without the lens hood. Is anyone aware of a way to attach a protective filter to the lens without using the lens hood? Thanks.

The hood adaptor is required, the hood can be left off. Attaching the adaptor gives you a place to place your hand as well. Leaving the adaptor on all the time with the ND filter, offers a level of protection to the lens and telephoto mechanism as well. It does cut the light by 1/8, however - most shots this isn't an issue.

oh my ...never use a ND filter for protection a MC filter or a skylight filter or most use a Multicoated UV filter, none of which cause any light loss at all.
Well 3/10 of 1% but that almost no loss. And there are several ways to attach a filter without the stupid Panasonic adapter.
One way is to use an after market adapter that is much shorter , but if you do not plan on using any add on lenses a nextphoto adapter is the simplest way.

If you do think you may want to add lenses either Telephoto or Wide angle or macro you should look into a 3rd party adapter
either Phayee, lovelifes or the peramaal adapter are all fine. You can perhaps get some more info here and everything about the FZ10 applies to the FZ20 also

I just purchased a new DMC-FZ30 camera. I am really happy with what I have seen so far. I did find a UV Filter which had been on an Canon AE1 that I had. It fits on the FZ30. Will this work for me or should I purchase another one.

There is no reason why it would not work....It may have some scratches or something from being old, but it must be 55 mm if it fits and should work..
Take some photos and see if you think they are OK.

Most people who get serious with the FZ abandon the poorly designed Panasonic hood for a third party adapter, which uses 62 instead, 72mm accessories. Check out “Phayee” or “CRing JKC” on eBay. They then get a Hama style collapsible hood search eBay “ Hama 62mm hood”, and 62mm UV to complete the package. This camera requires a good hood. This is not a sunshade / hood. There is a light ray called ambient light, which washes out colors especially on zoom lenses. This type of invisible bouncing light beam is blocked with a hood with decent depth.
