I have never used an external flash and don't even know where to begin. Would it be a waste of money or could I get the hang of it pretty quickly? I would love to avoid some of this red eye that I am getting inside and also get a more even distribution of light.

Yes an external flash will help and whileyou need to familarize your self with the flash it really is very simple. Inside it is simple to bounce the flash off the ceiling for an even light.
But remember the more zoom you use the more redeye you will get.
Use no zoom and get as close to the subject as possible to eliminate redeye.
The smaller the angle formed by a line drawn from the subject to the lens and the subject to the flash, the more the chance of redeye.
I too had the same worry about getting the Sunpak 383, but after doing so I am glad I did, it is VERY easy and quick to learn how to use, its self explanitory. You wont be dissapointed!

Thanks, Gene :)
I went ahead and ordered the external flash from B&H so I might ask for a little Flash 101 later this week! LOL
