Z740 Green AF Lamp

Just got the camera (Z740) a week ago. Took it over to the sisters house last night for Christmas Eve. As I was taking pictures during the night, I had a handful of people telling me how annoying the "Green Light" was. Since I was never IN any of the pictures, I had someone take a picture of me and sure enough, it is a tad bit on the annoying side!

So my question is this:

Have any of you Z740 owners had any kind of comments like that about the light?

Is there any way to just turn it off?

The light is the "AF assist lamp", a feature unique to the z740 model.
It was designed to help determine focus. Some think it helps, others say different.
Unfortunately, there is no way to turn it off.

If you just got the unit, perhaps it can still be returned or exchanged for something else.
Check out the Kodak p850 model, it has 12x zoom with image stabilization.
