Was wondering if its advisable to put a lense filter on a Kodak DX7590 to protect the lense from getting scratched (used to to this years ago with ole Cannon AE-1 lenses)?

It is spelled lens.
There are 2 distinct camps on this subject.
I am in the filter degrades the image and go naked camp. I only use a filter when there is a need for a filter(polarizer, ND), I always us a hood.
If the end of your lens barrel has threads a filter will fit, the number in mm next to the little circle with a line through it is the size, it's up to you if you need the filter.

I third the motion, but with an adder of when weather or environment call for extra protection. If I'm shooting on a rainy day, in a dust storm, or where salt spray may be a problem I will usually put a UV/Haze filter on the lens. It's easier to clean.
I have a plain UV filter and i only used it once because it adds a lot of flare. Since I sometimes need to protect my lens I'm after a multi coated noe now.
