Is there a standard thread size for tripod mounting holes on cameras?

i.e. will all cameras with a tripod hole, work on any tripod which uses a screw-type mount? (will a tripod that works with an old Canon AE-1 also work with a Canon Digital Elph ?

Seems to me that the old SLR film cameras had a bigger mounting hole than their much smaller digital counterpart.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Jeff

As far as I know, it is standard. I believe it's 1/4" - 20 (20 revolutions per inch). Interesting that it's not metric. Don't confuse this with the 3/8" thread at the top of a tripod that doesn't have a head. This is to mount the head, not the camera.

I'd like to add that I just read that some older cameras do use a 3/8" thread.

Medium format and plate cameras use 3/8". Many tripods also have 1/4" threads to ttacch the head to also. I had to put a 1/4 to 3/8 adaptor on my Cobra CT-30 in order to fit a Manfrotto 3D Super Junior head.

My Rollei has both 1/4" and 3/8".
