After TampaJim's suggestion of the A620, I went and compared it with the S2IS. I really like the way it feels and the controls, etc.
Which leads me to a new question...if I get the 620 and decide down the road to add a lens that will give me more zoom, will the fact that this camera doesn't have the IS feature cause problems with too much shake?
So now I'm weighing out the pros and cons between S2 IS and A620.

Sorry for being slow - I am working in Kansas (think VERY cold!) and haven't been on for a bit. I have always been a big fan of the "weld it onto the tripod" school of thinking - so I am not stuck on IS. Again, it is a "personal preference" issue. Image stabilization isn't a cure-all - it is nice to have, but it isn't everything. Unfortunately, you are going to have to decide what is most important to you - no one camera has it all, impossible.
I don't think adding a zoom, with or without, IS would be my choice. If you think you really want the zoom (and it is LOVELY), get the S2. If you want more portability but controls, get the A620. Want portability and could care less about controls - jump headfirst into the SD550.
I hope this helps. Everything is a give and take. I love my S2, but I also cherish my Elph series camera for those "stuff it into my pocket" days.
Take your time choosing and go play "touchy feely" until you get it right.
