I am very new to this or any camera. I need help understanding how to take a picture, but have it delay so I might get into the picture with my family.

The self timer on the H1 is the down button on the 4-way pad on the back. It has a picture of a little stopwatch on it. When you push this, an identical icon should show up somewhere on the screen. Then, just focus and release the shutter, the camera will wait 10 seconds before taking the picture.
