Hi, all!
I'm about to buy my first digital camera. After reading many specs, user reviews, and narrowing up the list of candidates, I'm convinced that DSC-H1 is the one with the best performance/price ratio for me.
From what I've read on the web, many people do experience the purple firing effect in their outdoor shots made at sunny wheather. Is it really that wrong? I intend to make pictures with 15x10 cm in size but some of them I'd like to scale up, say 30x20 cm. Will I be able to observe this effect on my pictures? Is there any way how to avoid it in the first place?
Another newbie question: Can I use the best available resolution to shot my pictures (15x10 and 30x20 cm) or do I rather use the second resolution with 3:2 aspect ratio (it's 2592x1728 IIRC)?
I know this is Sony-only forum but I'd like to mention that I also looked at Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5/-FZ20 but become discouraged when reading about the high noise level presence when in a low ISO mode, blurred pictures etc. Can anyone please comment on this? I'm no real professional, just want to make pictures of my family at home, outdoor, at holidays, and some landscape pictures and I need to be sure that I get the right camera for the purpose.
Thanks in advance!
Ivo

the fz20 is a better camera imho.
Purple fringing can not be avoided unless you only shoot low contrast scenes.

Regarding FZ20: Do you have it? Can you please confirm or refuse whether you're experiencing the issues I've been talking about?
Regarding purple fringing: So there is no way to avoid it? Is there any way to eliminate the impacts from the picture during the post processing phase? If so, is there any risk making a damage to my picture if I try to the post processing of that kind?
Best regards,
Ivo

I've had the H1 for 2 1/2 months now, and have only had one instance of purple fringing in one tiny section of one photo. I painted in the purple with 3 minutes of work in Photoshop Elements 3. No other issues at all!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Can I have a one silly question? What is Photoshop Elements? I'm aware of just Photoshop which is somehow pricey for use at home.

Photoshop Elements is a consumer version of Photoshop basically. It sells for much less (under $100) and has quite a bit of Photoshop's functionality. Here's a link:

I can guarantee you that if you post pictures taken at noon outside, you will see it.
Shoot a picture of the sky through a tree's branches and you will see chromatic abberation on every branch and limb.
CA doesn't bother me much unless it's of the red variety.
I dont own a fz20 but used one for a week of shooting. It packs a great punch, especially for the price and size. The constant f/2.8 leica lens and image stabilization make for a killer combo.
The imho the fz20 is like an Audi A4 whereas the Sony H1 is like a Ford Taurus. They both have 4 doors, v6 engines, but the devil is in the details.
I don't even think the H1 has a zeiss lens... does it?

It doesn't have a Zeiss lens solely because of the placement and type of OIS used, from what I've read.
