I just got my 350D (Rebel XT). Opened the box.. went to attach the lens..and noticed that there is a small clicking sound when I tilt the camera back and forth.
Is this normal? Or did I get a bad copy?
Thanks

Flip up the flash. If the sound goes away it was just that little arm that holds the flash up (ie keeps it from swinging up farther) rattling.

Flipped the flash up and tried - tilt up/down and tilt clockwise/anticlockwise.
The sound did get much less. But the sound is still there. Has other RebelXt/350D owners seen similar thing? I'm just trying to see if I need to take the camera back to the shop.

Related question: I know there must be hundreds (thousands?) of RebelXT/350D owners browsing the net - have you had any problems with the camera? Mechanical failures/electrical failures?

Thanks

It's normal flash bar rattle. I think you're looking for problems that don't exist. As for other mechanical problems...sure. There are issues. There are a lot of people using the camera in different situations and circumstances. Use your camera. If it has a problem worry about it then.

If you're really that concerned with mechanical failures you probably should have researched it extensively before making a purchase decision.

The "rattle" is normal and the same sound can be heard in other DSLR models. Just use the thing and do not worry about using it.

ok. thanks for the reassurance.
I just didn't notice the rattle at the shop - probably too noisy to notice. And I also did not notice it when using my friend's 350D. Anyway, good to hear.

Are there any differences between earlier releases of 350D and later releases? My friend just bought one last week - his 350D firmware was 1.0.3 out of the box. I just bought one yesterday from a different shop - my 350D firmware is 1.0.1. From this, I assume, my copy is an earlier release.

You can easily update the firmware of your camera. There is a link on the Canon site. I don't know it off hand but a little searching should turn it up.

I noticed the same thing when I got my camera, and, upon reading the user manual, found out that the ticking sound is actually the little sensor that detects if you are holding the camera horizontal or virtically. If you notice, when you take a picture, then use the playback to review it, if you took the photo with the camera vertical, the image is automatically flipped the right way up.

The sound you hear when you shake / turn the camera is only the little sensor, it's normal, and actually useful.
