Is there a way to view the shoton the LCD screen while taking the picture or do you have to use the viewfinder? Even my crapy Kodak Easy Share shows the shot on the LCD before taking the picture.

No digital SLR cameras use the LCD to preview a shot. The screen is only for reviewing pictures after you take them and setting options.

DSLRs don't show a live preview because there's a mirror between the lens and the sensor; the mirror directs the image to the viewfinder through a prism (or another mirror in the case of the 5D).

This is also why the battery life is so good on DSLRs. The sensor doesn't have to be fully powered until the shutter is released.

I think that it's also one of the reasons why dSLRs have less image noise, as CCD doesn't become warm from the constant use(e.g. on my Dimage Z3 I see more noise in pictures after using it for a while comparing to lower noise if I take a shot right after I turn on the camera).
But if you need to preview picture on the LCD instead of viewfinder, there are some small LCDs mounted on the viewfinder(Can't remeber brand right now) and let you view picture in real time, I'll post it later if remind.

UPDATE: I've found device I've mentioned before, it's called Zigview, here is the link: http://www.zigview.co.uk/
too bad that it cost so much :P
