I'm trying to find out how to get the results shown in the 3rd photo - "parallel polarized". Is it just a regular circular polarizer?
It is for clinical portraits, to show before and after shots for facelifts.

i don't know if you are going for any kind of specific look for your specific application, but the harsh flash glare on the skin looks pretty awful. to avoid the glare, bounce the flash off a card, off the ceiling, or shoot through a diffuser like a softbox.

It appears from the photo that two polarized filters are used. I wonder if that is what is meant by parallel polarizing.

Looks to me as if they are using polarizing filters on both the flash and the camera lens. Parallel polarizing would be with both the flash and lens filters oriented the same. Cross would be with them at right angles. You could get some polarizing materials from Edmund Scientific and experiment.

Here's an experimenter's kit for $22.50 that has some good stuff.
