I don't want to shell out $500 for one of these...

But I do have one of these...

I'm wondering if I could transfer photos from a DSLR directly to my PSP, so I could preview them in the field on the PSP's much larger screen. Is this even possible?

You might be able to if it has either
A) A USB port with streaming capability or
B) Video input
Video would be better I think...you could view them as if the camera is connected to a TV and use the camera to control a "slideshow" and zoom in and out...without ever transferring them.

That would be cool (the screen on the PSP ROCKS), you'd at least need a mini USB to mini USB cable (which I couldn't find with a quick search), then the PSP would need to recognize the camera as a drive. Given how tightly Sony has locked down the PSP's OS, I think it's a lost cause with cables. I recently tried to install one of the SNES EMU's that folks hacked for the PSP when it first came out but Sony had closed up the holes on the firmware version installed on my PSP so they didn't work.
On the other hand...in a year or so I expect to see more and more cameras with built in WiFi (doesn't the D2x already have it?). That's when the PSP will be a great option for remote viewing! Of course, by then all DSLR's will have PSP sized lcd's!
