The camera features a large, bright viewfinder image equal in size, clarity and brightness to viewfinders incorporated in conventional 35mm-format SLRs.
The viewfinder's size is NOWHERE close to the size of a 35mm format SLR. It's probably about a fourth of the size.

Steve's seems to have a few errors in the review. Note that the review says only lenses with the A setting on the aperture ring can be used. The custom menu still contains the setting to use manual lenses... I suspect the setting still works.

The *istDS actually DOES have a big and bright view finder, comparable to film SLR's. The view finder on my EOS 350D is about 75% the size of a film SLR (hard to really measure but I just now compared them), and the Pentax *istDS(2)'s view finder is noticably bigger.

I do not know why you think it is about a fourth in size?

Are you sure? I have the *ist DS and a Pentax ME film camera. I held the *ist DS to one eye, and the ME film camera to the other eye and compared them directly. It's about a fourth. Just about any other review says the *ist DS viewfinder is big and bright compared to other cameras in its class, but it's still nowhere near the size of a film SLR viewfinder.

Anyways, it's more like a third of the area. Here's an estimation of the difference.

The ME has a very large viewfinder as most pentax film cameras do, many canon film cameras unfortunately have small viewfinders like their DSLRs, so you two aren't comparing like to like.. The DS would have a similar sized viewfiner as some canon film cameras, just a hell of a lot smaller than something like the one in the Pentax ME or even my SFX (which is bigger thaan the DS but not as big as the one in my ME)..
