View Full Version : Dang near perfect protection...

I believe I have set up nearly bulletproof copyright protection of my images. The only way around it is the Print Screen button...however that only produces a very highly compressed jpg image and nothing worth printing. My watermark should take care of those few folks - for the most part.
Take a gander at this if you would:

That's a typical product page....ie the way I present my images for purchase. Right click has been disabled so that's a no-go. You might think, "WELL...the IMAGE NAME is right under the title...so I'll highlight it, CNTRL+C to copy, then type the full image URL into my browser, guessing that like most other sites, the images are in a top level folder called images!" The fact of the matter is, yes they are indeed in a top level folder called images. But go ahead and try to paste the url. Heck I'll give you the url right here...and save you some effort:

Then you might be thinking..."Ok ya jerk...I'll just browse to the images folder and find the file I want." I say ok go ahead:

Hotlinking is a no-go as well:

Soooo....what do you think? I allowed easy grabbing of the small thumbs...figuring the most anyone will get use of them for is maybe an article.

Yeah cuz I shut down the other ways. It was screwing up the sizing of my other product photos. I know it's already in the computer's cache as well but I look at it as not making it easy on those who dont know any better.
The only people who would really want my pics are the parents/families/drivers & so on and I highly doubt they'd dig through their computer's temp files to get it. If so, there's a watermark they have to fight too.
Oh and by the way Rhys...
...modifying the photo like that is illegal - whether to prove a point or not. I've reported your post.

Lol. Report away. You asked for people to check yor site. BTW I used Get Right to browse and download. You need to block file browsing. And f you really want to attack people who try to help then nobody will help you. I'm assuming for your sake that your last post was in good humour.

Uh, your first post could pretty much be interpreted as a challenge to give it a try. While Rhys and I don't always agree about everything, I can't fault him for accepting the challenge and providing you with information on how easy it is to get around your efforts. If anything, he is providing a service. There are people that charge good money for analysing security issues. Also, he did not remove the watermark, and the only use was purely academic. I don't claim to give legal advice, but I think there's something about academic use with credit given to the copyright holder. I could suggest a few other reasons, but it seems a waste of time.

Yeah I did ask people check it...but downloading an image and modifying it unnecessarilly and illegally aren't the same thing. You can prove your point by stating facts.

So I wonder what you would sue for... The 'illegal' profits made by using your images? Zilch.
The 'damage' done to your -what?- 'good name and reputation'? You have repeatedly asked for opinions in various threads about your site security, with the evident challenge that people helpfully check it out in this non-commercial context to help you protect your commercial interests. Rhys did that.
What is left, 'mental pain and anguish'? Seems like a stretch to me, but I am not a lawyer.
I don't know why, but I would have expected someone who hung around race tracks professionally to have a thicker skin.
Oh well,
Clyde

Sorry Rhys. I've been fighting a migraine since yesterday morning and it's killing me. It's no excuse for snapping but I apologize nonetheless.
I think I'm gonna stay away from the boards for awhile - at least till this insane headache cools down some.
The image link http://www.cdi-buy.com/images/2005-09-02_003.jpg works perfectly well in Opera. Right clicking also works.
I know .00X% of users are on Opera, so you may not be too worried about it, but just FWIW.

Yeah I tested it in Opera too but for me, none of the images show up at all...so in reality the site isn't usable for Opera people...but I'm not really concerned. Not to be ignorant but there aren't enough Opera users out there yet for me to worry.
well done rhys.... good get!!!
to you cdi... look before you leap and then thank rhys for his advice.. free at that.

Kev you coulda let this thread die. I did apologize to Rhys already. The typical user isn't going to know about programs like Getright anyway. Those that do...aren't gonna want my pics.
sorry cdi... the voices in my head took over :)

Ooerr. Voices in the head.Reminds me of the chief of police in Britain that used to have protracted conversations with God as to which inocent bystander would get framed next for which crime. He got carted off to the lunatic asylum then released when Thatcher opened all the cell doors and turfed the nutters out onto the streets. I think he's either drinking out of bottles in brown paper bags under railway arches now or is in control of the metropolitan police :p

I'm at the library, where they globally disable right-click (the following 250 terabytes of profanities referring to people who needlessly cripple public computers have been removed from this post). Something for someone who has Mozilla (don't know if it works with firefox) to try:
Edit -> Preferences. Click "Advanced", then "Scripts and Plug-ins". Uncheck "disable or replace context menus". Then, I want to know if you can right click on the image. I can't do it here, like I said, cause right-click doesn't work at all.
Just left click the image and press alt+V - that should save the image.

For Firefox users:
Tools > Page Info > Media > a list of all images or other media used on the page... find the one you want, then "save as"
I have a "Page Info" button on my toolbar for quicker access as I use "Page Info" quite alot...

Well.. in Firefox I copied and pasted this link into the address bar, and got to the image fine. I could take the image at will.
Of course, the aggressive watermark makes the picture pretty much useless (as you intended.) But still, you can grab the image (if you wanted to) by go ing to the image url.
