I have flash that I used with a 35 mm SLR - a Vivitar Auto Thyristor 550FD. Will this work with my Panasonic Z30? I have tested it and it fits and it flashes, I just don't know if another flash like the Sunpak 383 will give me better results, or of someone has a better recommendation. Thanks

It seems that flash has a guide # of 80 ..a 285HV or a sunpak383 have a guide# of 120 plus they seem to have more adjustments but if you are satisfied with the way its working it should be OK.

Thanks for your response. I find all of what you say very very helpful when you respond to anyone. Could you please explain the ramifications of using a flashguide of 80 vs 120 when taking pictures with my Z30? Thanks again

The guide number of a flash is given in feet or meters and can be given at various focal lengths but to compare flashes just compare the numbers at the same local lengths.
And while maybe someone else can explain the technical end of this...it seems that 1/2 of the guide number is a good reference for maximum distance the flash is effective. So that would indicate the 550 should work pretty well to 40ft while the 383 works to about 60ft.
