Hi guys,

I'm a new member here and I have some questions for you experts.

I want to take some very close shot of a diamond ring or jewerly. The photo has to be very clear and it should display all the details of the ring.

Should I get a 10x optical zoom digital camera for that? What brand and model would you guys recommend? I normally prefer Olympus, how about the Olympus C-740? Is it good enough to do this job?

What does it mean by 20x optical zoom on a video camcorder and 10x optical zoom on a digital camera? I would go with a video camcorder if it can do this job for me as well because I have two digital cameras already.

Thanks in advance

You need a camera with very good macro capabilities to take good jewlery shots. Nikon tends to be the best in this respect, but Canon's very good too. The Canon A610 ($250) and A620 ($350) can focus down to 1cm from your subject. What's your budget?

so I must use a digital camera to do this? A camcorder is out of question?

My budget is around $500. What is the importance role of optical zoom in this task? Or I just need to have something that has the macro capability?

Thanks.

A camcorder is a video camera. A digital camera is a photo camera. So, yes, you need a digital camera unless you want people to watch a video of a ring just sitting there.

What I trying to ask was can I take a pic with a video camera? I thought video camera should be able to use for taking photos besides recording video.

I already have two digital cameras home and like to get a video camera if it has the same functionality of a digital camera.

If you are right, I guess I have to get another digital camera to do this job

Many camcorders also have image capture ability nowadays...up to 2 and even 3 megapixel if I am not mistaken. But, I doubt the quality of a decent digital camera will be there...

If you want good details on macro shots, get a digital camera for it.

Ok thanks.

Could you explain which functionality of a digital camera should I look into when I want good details on macro shots?

I check the specification of Canon A610, it doesn't mentioned about macro capbility in the specs of the camera... And Canon A610 only has 4x optical zoom.

Originally I thought optical zoom is the key in taking some good macro shots. Could someone explain plz? Thanks.
