The Lens Forum is completely dedicated to the discussion of lenses for Digital SLR's. About one in every 5 threads created in the Lens forum pertains to add-on lenses for point and shoots which is not the intent of the lens forum. These threads largely go unanswered unless somebody (like myself) redirects these users to the proper location. I also see that every so often, people will erroneously post an add-on lens thread in the Canon Digital SLR, Nikon DSLR, etc. forums.

Is there something that could be done to make the intent of these forums clearer so that people stop posting these threads in the wrong place? One idea I have is to make a new Digital SLR forum category and place Digital SLR Chat, Lenses, and the individual manufacturer forums for DSLR's (Canon DSLR, Nikon DSLR, Pentax, Oly, etc.) under this new category. Any thoughts?

I think we should just dump the Lenses forum altogether and let people ask in areas specific to their camera's manufacturer. Thoughts?

I think it would be better if you had a Canon Mount Lens Forum, Nikon Mount Lens Forum, Konica Mount Lens Forum, Pentax, and so on.

Get rid of the lenses forum and let people post lense questions in the general camera threads like "my s2 can I get a telephoto lens for it" in canon forum instead of lenses forum, since most lense questions are dSLR anyway and having a static thread might help people find information which is often repeated for various dSLR systems.

That's another possible solution (in reference to Jeff's suggestion). The only downside to it is that third party lenses (Sigma, Tamron) are best suited to a "neutral" forum like the Lenses forum where any DSLR owner may peruse them rather than a manufacturer specific forum. In any case, if you do can the Lens Forum, please, please take care with my 3 threads (Lens Buyers Guide, Lens Reviews, and Lens Review Gathering) in there. Archive them or move them over to the general DSLR forum if you can't keep the contents of the Lens Forum.

IMO it's not just the lens forum. There seem to be a couple of other forums that get threads belonging to another forum.

Sounds good to me.

I don't know why people do it, but they insist on posting in [XXXX] DSLR forum.

In response to Rex's buyers guides in the Lens Forum getting archived, would it be possible to turn them into stickies for each of the manufacturer threads so that people can still access them from their respective parts of the forum?

It would be a shame to just put them to the way-side. They are extremely useful and Im sure Rex would hate to see them go after all the work he has put into them.

The Lens Forum is now closed. Here is the plan for what's going to happen next.

The Lens Buyer's Guide and Lens Review Gathering threads will be moved over to the Digital SLR forum. I am also contemplating converting the DSLR price guide into a full DSLR buyer's guide, but I feel that that effort may end up causing more harm than help, so I probably won't.

The Lens Review thread will be split and posted in each individual manufacturer forum (I'll just start with Canon and Nikon for now). So when you view it, it's company specific, but when they're gathered, it's in the general forum to keep things clean.

What about 3rd party lenses? They will be listed in all their supported mounts, so if Canon and Nikon support it, it'll appear in those respective forums.

The Lens Buyer's Guide should be migrated over by tonight or tomorrow, but the others will take more time.

Jeff -

Great idea. Somehow can we still maintain the current content?

I sign off on it, which by the way, the papers are coming UPS, 5 to 30 days standard ground, LMAO - but seriously, I think you are on to something here because I can't count the number of times I see people do this anyway, perhaps its because they never scroll down to the great depths of the main forum page to find the lens forum. Plus this will save me tons of time from pointing this out constantly! :D

Cryckies, I just looked, the lens forum. . . what happened! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Just as i suspected, I've been idle to long, damnit, There are supposed to be covers on the TPS reports??? What the. . .
