Hello,
Fomer user and still owner of my F-828. I bought the F-828 as soon as it came out and shortly thereafter, everyone else introduced a camera with a 3 color version of the F-828's chip.
Has anyone read / heard of this happening with Sony's R-1 chip?
Right now I am in a holding pattern with my new S9000, as an upgrade to my F-828. That bigger R-1 chip looks interesting, but I am not crazy about the R-1's reported performance ( based only on reading the web).

How long before other manufacturers bring something out with the large sensor? What I'm looking for is the same size sensor with an average weight body - the R-1 weighs in at almost 1kg, for me that's too much.
So how long will I have to wait?

For the price of a sony R-1 you could buy a D50 with a pretty nice lense, or even a Digital Rebel with a decent lense. Any reason why you guys wouldn' t consider this option?
I am not saying sony produces an inferior, as nikon uses sony ccd's but for the flexibility and options that a DSLR offers I would definitely recommend it for the price. In addition the Sony has a smaller APS sensor : 21.5 x 14.4mm : 10.3MP compared to the Nikon D50 - APS-C : 23.7 x 15.6mm : 6.24MP. The increased Mega Pixels of the sony paired with the smaller sensor means more noise, especially at higher ISO's. Just take a look at the clear evidence, I am a Canon fan, but I would definitely recomend a DSLR (even a Nikon) over a point and shoot.

I have been shooting my F-828 for the last 2 years and now my S9000 since October this year
One day I picked up my D60 camera bag, with flash, lenes, etc. IT was very heavy.
I can travel very light with my S9000.
The only DSLR I may look at is the coming Sony DSLR, as it would have to have alot of technology offered to break into the existing DSLR competition,
Maybe Live Preview, Hologram Autofocus, etc.).

I haven't read all the carefully, but I think that the performance is slow relative to DSLR's, not relative to other fixed lens cameras. This is a fair comparison to make due to the price and features, but the camera won't be sluggish compared to normal fixed lens cameras.
