New to photography

And I've got a thirst to learn that can't be quenched. :) Anyway, since Christmas is right around the corner...I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good beginners book for photography. I pick up on things quite quickly, and a layman's answer isn't always good enough for me. I'd like a book that defines and explains things so they are easy to understand, yet expands a little bit further on them. I hope I am making sense here... :)

The manual that came with my XT does a decent job of explaining things, but I'm not satisfied with the level of detail in it.

What do you guys think of the Canon I9900 printer?
