I've got a trip to New Mexico scheduled for Feb. and am going to need a portable storage device. I know these devices have taken off lately and am wondering what would be a good one to look at. I don't think I need to be able to view the shot. Mainly looking at reliability, speed, and downloads per battery charge. Any preferences?

Here are a few I pulled from Adorama.
1) Sony HDPS-M1 40G $260
2) Jobo Giga One 30G $155
3) Argosy Photo Hard Disk 20G $210
4) Wolvering FlashPac 40G $187

Any others to take a look at? Thanks for you advice.

I just got the wolverine flashpac 60gb at fry's for about $130 after $50 rebate. Look around for deals on these right now - I don't think this is their only rebate offer going on.

Come to think of it, the shelf price was pretty low too. Maybe they're making way for something new coming out? Who knows.

I haven't given it a serious field test, but it only took but a moment (seriously, I think I blinked) to move 5 pictures from an SD card through its built-in 7-in-1 card reader.

It's about the size of standard hard drive and much lighter - great for travel.

I haven't had it long enough to vouch for its reliability, but I really wouldn't expect any device of this kind to have problems in that regard. Technology has come far enough to feel at ease here. Also, I don't know how many downloads per charge to expect - I tend to keep everything fully charged whenever possible. A power inverter (xantrex x-power 400) that plugs into the cigarette lighter in my truck helps that. If your travels are based around some kind of vehicle, then this thing is a must. Two outlets, and can connect straight to the battery if need be.

No picture preview, but it does give you confirmation of how many files were copied from the card.

Really, for the capacity the price can't be beat.

i've also got a wolverine flashpac 60gig. had it since may this year and have filled it up, cleaned it out, and filled it up again - never any reliability issues. connected to the PC it is very fast, pretty much as fast a reading and writing to a sandisk ultra II CF via a sandisk USB 2 card reader/writer. copying from card to device is fairly quick, and battery life is very good.

Thanks for the help. I'll take a real close look at the Wolverine, especially the 60g for that price. I've got a power inverter in my camera bag so keeping it charged shouldn't be a problem. I only have a 1g & 512m card and am expecting to fill them up several times on this trip.

Thanks again.
