calibrating with spyder

I am having a hard time getting my pictures from my Olympus P440 printer to match what I see on my computer monitor. I have calibrated the monitor with Colorvision Spyder but it doesn't do any good. Any ideas or suggestions? I am a little confused about the room lighting when I calibrate. I know you're not suppose to have light shining onto the monitor... am I suppose to turn off all the lights?
