i have been asked to do a family photo it will be taken indoors any help will be greatfull i am using lumix fz20

If it has a custom white balance setting I would set it using the light which will fall on your subjects. Maybe a tripod also . . . Pay attention to your background, you don't want objects to appear as if they are "Growing" out of someones head or something that will take focus away from the family.

not really a formal type photo is it? if you don't have a bounce flash you can diffuse the light a bit by simply dangling a piece of tissue over your built in flash using tape. using a slightly slow shutter speed in combination with flash will add some ambient light and color to your photos (if that's what you are going for). try not to go slower than 1/50 or 1/40 sec or your subjects my not hold still long enough. take a few shots to make sure you get at least one where someone isn't blinking. use a tripod if you have one.
