That's a nice idea - I will be away - hopefully I will have the camera with me - in a weeks time. I will watch out for silhouete oportunities... along
with Panorama oportunities, and Building skylines, and Landscapes, and
people, and ...and...
BTW - do you have any manual controls or adjustments on your current
camera???
Just a thought - with a silhouete like that first one - I might go to the
window first and get an outside reading and leave the camera set to expose for that, that way the veiw outside doesn't wash out because of the dark
forground. Alternatively you can experiment with under exposure - a pic like that would need at least -1.0 ev probably more.
Just trying to help the creative juices

Beautiful shots guys esp like Sedona JTL that Cannon really does colour well. Here's a couple of "nearly" silhouettes from the Grand Canyon from me. They are just straight out of the camera the second one was just cropped a little to get rid of some distracting foreground.

Thanks JTL, yes I see what you mean about the second shot. Because I was there it conjours up slightly different thoughts & memories for me. One is of the vastness of the scene when you look down the canyon & the other is the fact that it was bitterly cold that morning I didn't have any gloves or hat & the rest of the family had dashed back to the car & were getting very impatiant waiting for me to take these shots so they were a bit rushed & pot luck. I'm afraid they just couldn't understand why I insisted on staying out in the cold when it was pretty dark, starting to snow & we had a long drive ahead of us. Oh well maybe one day I'll be understood :D

I believe this classifies as a silhouette! I was driving home from class and this scene caught my attention. Only problem was, I didn't have my tripod, so I had to substitute my car roof for the tripod! (the slight shaking of my car caused the little bit of bluriness) This was shot with the Powershot S2, shutter @ 2sec and f/3.5. Hope you enjoy!

Perfectly! Absence of a tripod sometimes causes problems. It is possible to use that that is near at hand. A bottle of beer, for example! ;)

You're right, when you don't have a tripod while needing one you have to be creative ;). When I was in Rome I had forgotten my tripod, but I really needed one to take photographs in the churches of the city. Now I could have bought a small table top tripod on every corner of the street, but sometimes I tend to be quite greedy :o. So instead of a tripod I have used benches, the floor, my knees, travelguides, Italian leaflets, and some other things resulting in many sharp pictures :).
Here's a picture of a silhoutte taken on Saint Peter's Square in Rome (this one has nothing to do with the tripod stuff, by the way):

Thank you sooooo much. I Just got into photography about a month ago and I LOVE it!! So I don't really know that much about it. So when you say "post processing", I'm asuming you are talking about "editing" or something and if you are then no. I haven't done anything with it. Just as is. Thank you for the warm welcoming! I feel the love
Prospero
02-03-2006, 02:23 PM
You're right, when I say post processing I mean editing (for instance with photoshop). The reason I asked is that I have never ever seen the sky looking like that in my life, so I figured you had made the sky purple by editting it (I sometimes make my sunset pictures more beautiful that way :o). Now I know that you haven't done anything with it, it makes the picture seem even more beautiful :).

02-03-2006, 02:46 PM
Ok cool cool, I'm learning! YaaaaY. I don't have any editing software. So what do you recomend? I only thing I was when I was taking the picture I messed around with the white balance features. So I guess the sky really wasn't that actually color. It was really close though. Does that count as post processing?
fizbin
02-03-2006, 02:50 PM

Thanks for your comments, Fizbin. I'll try to remember that the next time I am in Rome.
Mumbles, changing the white balance is done before you take the picture, so that would be pre-processing ;). I also use Photoshop CS2. In my opinion it's the best there is, but like Fizbin said its expensive. A bit of a cheaper option would be Paint Shop Pro. You could also try Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) which is free, but has only the basic functions. Perhaps there is also some basic editting software supplied with your camera.

Ravello is indeed amazing. Though we reached it be car, I think I did see the steps you had to walk over to reach Ravello. It was in the summer and very hot when I was there, so I felt glad we didn't have to walk over all these steps :). I don't recall having seen the Tower Hotel in Ravello, but I was only there for an hour or two.

San Francisco is a great photographers city. A mixture of victorian and modern with the piers, and Packbell Park (uh SBC Park) thrown in. Crissey Field, The Presidio, Golden Gate Park, Fort Point, Exploratorium, and of course... the zoo.
One of these trips back home to the Bay Area, I plan to spend a few days (take CalTrain up there from Belmont) and just shoot The City.
Anyway... The picture was taken from my back yard (by the pool). A great place to watch the sunset with a beverage.;) Ahhh.

I thought I'd revive this thread with this one. It was my first shot with a circular polariser fitted to my FZ20. The sky was pretty pale without the polariser but with the filter it brought out the sky & showed off the trees in silhouette more than I was expecting. I think I'll have some fun with this filter when I get used to it.
Here 2 silhouettes I shot. The first one with a Canon A70 in Seaworld and the second one with a Canon S2 during a sunset boattrip in Bali.

Probably cheating, since this is heavily PP'd in an attempt to salvage something from a less than successful attempt at shooting at a concert last week (seat too far away, no control over lighting, of course, and my glass is either too short or too slow)

A couple of clues in a detailed crop of the cow parsley. If you look closely you'll see some dragon flies resting for the night. It just goes to show you never know what youre taking pictures of. Started off trying to capture a sunset & ended up with a silhouette of dragonflies. All shots straight from the camera & cropped no other PP. Oh just to help you find them there are two or possibly three dragonflies on this shot.
Shot details originally ~12x zoom with FZ20 at f2.8, 1/100s hand held, iso 80. then very heavilly cropped probably around 70% ish.

By me under-exposing the sunset it enriches the colors and throwing any subjects into silhouette. Making for a dramatic scene.

20 minutes handheld?? Didn't you have to scratch or something? Or maybe you set the camera on your car, something like that? Beautiful pic.
Thanks Phill and Toriaj. No, the shot was not handheld. I lay my camera on the ground (which was soft so that it would not damage the camera) and I pointed it upwards using some branches. I kept the shutter pressed down using a piece of elastic.
The night was indeed very still. I took the shot at 3 o'clock at night, so most people had long gone to bed. I had to switch off all the lights in the house because they caused strange bright parts on the trees.

I don't know how it goes for Vista, but it seems to work in XP. Go to the screen properties where you choose the destop wallpaper. Make sure you've selected that background and click on 'browse'. It should open the folder where that image is saved.
Nice wallpaper too, looks good with Vista :) .
