My DSC-W5 has worked fine since I bought it in May. One day it works fine, the next time I try to turn it on, nothing happens. The green "power on" light lights up for a second, and then goes out again. The lens does not extend, and the LCD is dark. The camera makes no noises when I press the power button. I treat it like fine china- never been dropped. I tried replacing the Nimh batteries with another set of new nimh- but nothing changed. My charger can erase "memory effect," and has a charge status LCD- the batteries all show full. Sony support suggested that some type of malfunction had occurred- and that it needs service.
