Zoom Trivia - 35mm zoom what is it in digital?

i have the fuji discovery (it's an AWESOME camera by the way) 35mm obviously. I love the 1000 zoom can anyone tell me what that zoom would be equivalent to in the digital world? 10x? Thanks!

Your question is not really possible to answer. Near as I can tell the Fuji Discovery Zoom 1000 35mm camera has a 35-80mm zoom lens (roughly 2x across the range).

There is no way to consistently translate 35mm lens focal lengths to generic digital ones. This is due to the fact that the lens foacl length is relative to the size of the image sensor. For a 35mm film camera this is the negative which is constant for all 35mm film cameras. However, for digital cameras the image sensor size varies with every sensor manufacturer, sensor model and even how much of the sensor the camera maker masks off.

For most digital cameras you will find that the manufacturer will list the 35mm equivalent focal lengths for their digital ones. You are going to find that nearly every digital camera in the point and shoot zoom style, like your film Fuji, have lenses that generally start at ~35mm and offer 3x zoom ranges giving them a top end of ~100-110mm; better than your Fuji.

Obviously I was asking because I don't want to have any less than the zoom on that camera and it's an AWESOME zoom. I appreciate all that info!
