Hi,

I have an ancient canon digital camera pre optical zoom. i really want to upgrade to a camera tha has a few more megapixels. I was thinking of something that is smaller and an ultracompact camera cause i don't want to be carrying around a huge camera and i want something around 5 megapixels. should i go all the way up to 5 megapixels cause i doubt i'll print out more than a 5 X 7. I did some research on the canon sd-400 and the lumix fx-8 and i was wondering which one was better. i also want to make sure that the camera will have a vga (640x480) movie mode. if you have any other suggestions i'm willing to hear. i just want something that's easy to use and will take great pictures. budget is very important cause those 2 cameras would be at the very top end of the scale.

These are both very nice cameras, easy to use, and they will take pictures that are much better than you might expect. I had the canon s400, the previous incarnation of the sd400, and was very happy with it. It lived in my pocket, didn't look so great after over a year bouncing around against spare change and car keys, but always took good pictures.

The fx8 is a little larger than the sd400, and doesn't have an optical viewfinder. It does, however, have "optical image stabilization," which will help you take decent pictures when you are holding the camera over your head, for instance.

I think I might lean towards the panasonic, but if you stop looking at web sites like this after you buy either one, you will be very happy with your purchase. Otherwise, you will inevitably notice a better model coming out in a couple of months.

Enjoy...
