How about some of you guys pop yerselves behind your own cameras then??
I am posting this as it's just about all I have like that - but we rarely take
ourselfs as the subject.
Maybe it'd be fun for a while to post a few of ourselves - yep, I will try and
make a better one than this sometime soon...

While I set it up, composed it, etc... A friend actually clicked the shutter for me. BTW, this is done using my new Tamron 28-75, which is the the bees knees so far.6645

Hey,
nice shots everyone...this one wasn't actually my idea, i was immitating a friend's self portrait. ended up looking pretty weird, at least to me...

Nice idea Geoff. Alnath - great macro! You've sure got some meditation eyes (as opposed to my medication eyes).
Vich - that's a cool shot - very artistic, th B&W and the close crop really
make the shot. Then the focus on the right eye also gives it weight,
the left eye being slightly less sharp makes for a bit of mystery ....
hey! I'm getting all arty now. How about: -
Great Shot!

P.S.
Certainly it not a digital photo - then it simply did not exist...

Thanks Geoff. You can say it, "blur" isn't (always) a bad word, despite it's letter count.:D That was my nifty fifty at f1.8 held at arm's length. Looked directly into the lense but still took about 10 shots to pick the best focus. Best 20 minute project in quite a while. Tough day for a self portriat though, no-sleep thing. B&W fixed that some.
Astro; great shot! The highlights and bokeh really contribute. Yeah, guess we come in all ages. Looks like Sherlock's got you beat on the youth side though.

Astro - don't worry about being young.... you'll be like the rest of us before you notice.
Not sure if I have the courage to post a self portrait....
I still describe myself as almost "almost young" (see profile). the camera never lies, unfortunately.

I have been off-line for the past week. I'll settle into a new location next week, but in the meantime I took this in Washington DC a couple of days ago. I'm not sure what I was trying to get but I got me instead! A slightly distorted view of myself. I'll look for a better shot later.

I'm going to walk out on a limb here and post my self portrait. Please do not make fun of me. I wear a mask out in public because I am so self conscious of how I look. I had to enlarge the picture up so its a little grainy.

Hey - if it wasn't for the modern camera - you could get away with
saying it was an old photo. I quite like the atmosphere the blur and
the almost sepia B&W - who says every photo has to be pin sharp!!

There's some really great shots here - wide and varied too.
Do you think I can take a decent shot of myself though??>
I think I will have to use the remote and the tripod because
all the hand held ones, even at arms lenth and zoomed in a
bit, turn out looking awfull ~ nothing like what i see when I
pass a mirror - but I'm not very photogenic!!

Well, I already posted one version of this... I have two uses for my DSLR. One is for reference material for painting, and the other is to document the paintings themselves. There is a difference in what I want out of the two different types of photos. In my reference, I hardly every use flash. I am not so much interested in "the way things really are" but more in "how they appear to be." That means that I want someone walking beside a green wall to have the green bounce into their skin tone, even though out of context it might make them look ill. Contrariwise, I want the pictures of my paintings to reflect as well as they can what the paintings would look like under good lighting.
Comments welcomed...

Not sure what it means, but its got some classic catchy components of, ahhhmm, something. Yellow cab, movie theater, street guy, lots of "lines" helping the eye out. Anyway; nice painting. You've got a nice skill there!

I no longer live in LA but did live in Hammond. Brothers and sister still live in the Hammond area. One brother lived south of New Orleans lost all after Katrina, is now in Hammond. We are now based out of Knoxville, TN but travel the country with wife's job. Her dad is in Baton Rouge.

So sorry to hear of your brother's loss from the storm. Hope things are getting better for him. My niece is in college in Hammond, had to evacuate twice. Can relate to the damages, all of my family about 150 on one side, live in Southwest Louisiana. They were all blessed, no injuries, and minimal damages. Just 30 miles from where Rita came in. Anne - thank you for the very kind comments for Rachel - I will make sure she reads it and posts some more of her piccies.
Also - don't be so hard on yourself - you look as friendly as you write. I hate seeing my own pictures - particularly the ones I tried of myself as the perspective was distorted (too close for portrait). Gotta get used to the fat that I don't look as young as I once did I guess!!

A self-timer shot. There's window light on one side and tungsten room light on the other. I like to keep the camera confused so it doesn't get uppity.

Great subject in this photo. Must be a very wise man. Bible says "grey (hore) hair is a symbolic of wisdom. This guy's look is full of characture ( care-rat-ture) . Gee sure wish I could spell! Great photo. And by the way HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY to you!,:D :D

Thanks for the birthday greetings. Wise? Grey hair? You mean if someone hangs around long enough, some wisdom is bound to seep in? ;)
I never felt particularly wise. Also never had any children, but if I had, here's the wisdom I'd pass on to them:
- 90% of everything is crap. Deal with that or the crap will start running your life for you.
- Throw your TV in the garbage and spend the time you save at the library.
- Rotate your tires.
- Remember the first rule of kitchen/lab work: hot glass looks exactly the same as cold glass.
There. That should do it. :D
Regards,
Bill

Bill - Wise words there from you. !!!
I reckon you are right about the TV - it seems to rule everyones lives!
Rotating tyres is also good. (That's how the car moves along the road)
Interestingly, unlike hot metal, if you quickly brush your hand against
hot glass it doesn't usually burn - but you get the hot message and withdraw.
(Don't try this folks - I could get in terrible trouble!!!).
I think you look great for 60 - obviously less stress through ditching the TV
and rotating tyres etc.
Carla & Anne - just like you to know you are both lovely looking people
I wish we all lived a bit nearer as you all seem so friendly - we could have had
some kind of Photographic group or something...
OK - after all that blah from me - I guess I have to pop another pic in..
here's one from 2004 taken this time by my Son - kind of like a self portrait as
I told him exactly what I wanted.
Camera Olympus C-740 - which I still have lots of respect for.

I was fairly sure I didn't actually have a picture of myself. But this is me.
Once upon a time, many, many years ago I visited the USSR (early 80s). I was advised that if anyone photographed me - I had to make sure it was my "best side" and not my "backside".
Me - perhaps not my best side - but typical of the sweaty mess that my wife sees when we take walking holidays.

I'm in search for something interesting in my part of Cali. I don't get to go out much so Mother Nature gets to have all her privacy....I'm just getting into photography...so I'm still in search for creativness. So I use...whatever creativness I have..on me. Haha.

Hi to all - here is my SP offering...........

Just received my WIDE converter and tried some handheld shots into a mirror - lots of light glare as well. Really liking the S3 so far - lots still to learn.

Cool shot there Nikki603. I like the washed out white background.
Here's a shot of me that my girlfriend took for me. She's not a photographer or anything but knows the basics of taking a photo.(zoom, frame & press the shutter). I did the editing in CS2. Converted to B&W using the Channel Mixer.

Thank you Avi! I personally like the black n white ones better as well... I forgot to set the white balance for Brennan...and she didn't really know how to work my camera.. So...the colors were actually greenish. I think Cory did a good job of cleaning it up! The colored ones look ALMOST regularly colored!! Haha

Regards,
Bill
That's very interesting. Something to keep in mind for sure.

I hate being in front of the camera as well - one was in january (curly - I had just come back from taking shots in a blustery Paris), the other in Feb (straight, at home in Austin)
Neither one is a great shot, but they're better than the other's I've taken of myself!
