Hi everyone,
Been having a play tonight with the rose shot that I posted in flower thread earlier this week. And would love to know what you guys think....also to see anything you may have done with PP.
Hope you like........

Val - brilliant, what a creative post!
This must surely pave the way for an altogether new thread
for Creative combinations or whatever
Great stuff

It's whack...but I like it...it made me laugh...in a good way...:D
This is a dangerous idea to start, 'cause I might just be tempted to stay up until 4:00am coming up with the most horirble monstrosity that I can think up...and no one wants that! :D

Of course, this could start the ongoing debate about whether it's photography or art. :D When I used to belong to a camera club, we had to start a whole category just for manipulated shots, because only one person was doing that at the time.
Very interesting shot Val... good job!!!

Thanks for the positive comments, the original picture is one I posted in the flower thread......In the pink (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7041&page=145) - the water is the flood filter which is downloadable from www.flamingpear.com.
I applied the flood filter to the image, played about with the blending and this was the result.
Glad you like.:)

I was taking some pictures of my all too normal looking house plant, so I decided to play around with it and came up with this (using the Glowing Edges filter in Photoshop):
Behold the "Funky Plant" ..... (no I couldn't think of a better name :) )

Cool idea, this thread. :)
Here's one where I was kind of disappointed in the original because my settings weren't right when this big guy came flying by, and the picture didn't do this regal fellow the justice it should have.

Dawoofo: did take that with your S2 ? How close were you ?
Dawoofo
11-28-2005, 07:57 PM
Yes, Firas, got him with the old trusty S2. :) I was zoomed in at 12X optical and in this picture he was probably approximately 60-70 feet from me. That's the 100% crop, though I'll admit the original picture was darker, more grainy and his head was over-exposed—he caught me off guard. :p
Aww what the heck, I'll play.

Some good work guys, its great to see what can be done.....
Here is a before and after shot. I was out at the weekend trying to get that elusive heron with mixed results. The weather was awful, and the bird was keeping about as far away has he possible could.....this shot nearly ended up on the cutting room floor....
http://mansaards.smugmug.com/photos/47228911-L.jpg
But a lot of manipulation later and came up with this.......a bit arty I know and some will like and some wont. Managed to get an A4 size print and it looks pretty good. Lets have your comments...

Val - I am truly staggered that you managed to pull that much detail and clarity from such a dark shot. I would take my hat off to you - except I don't wear one!!:D
Just to say that I do appreciate how hard you muct have worked on that one.
Great job.

Thanks Geoff,
Not all the shots were this dark but I liked the position of the bird best in this one so felt it was worth the effort. It was actually quite rewarding I may have another look at some of my other rejects! Glad you like it.

Val123, that was incredible.
I think it turned out wonderful and the position of the bird was just right. Certainly makes me want to have a look at my rejects that were a bit too dark to see how I might manipulate them a bit. Perhaps some of the ones I might have liked a lot can still be salvaged.
val, looks like you squeezed as much of of that shot as you possible could, down to the very last pixel. Good job!

Hey Val,
Just wanted to thank you for turning me on to FlamingPear. That flood effect is definitely going to become a staple effect in my arsenal. I also like some of the other effects they offer like Flexify.
Great job on the bird. It has a magical quality to it. I have a red shouldered hawk picture that could probably benefit from a similar treatment.
Here's my offering in the Flower/Flood category. It is set up to be used as desktop wallpaper with icons on the left side of the monitor.

Val I just found your little bird on here & wow it just seems like magic. I was so amazed & curious to see if I could see anything in your original shot I hope you don't mind but I just tried auto levels on it & wow there it was a magic woodland scene. It was a bit overdone & pixcelated but a scene non the less. So I had another go & just increased the contrast & it showed up again, a bit green, but a bit clearer. Still not a patch on yours though (see attached). I have to say I am still amazed by all this & more convinced than ever to get some sort of image manipulation guide. Any chance you could share what you did to get to that stunning result?

Hi all,
I had done an orchid composition using the flood effect and my wife liked it so much she had me print and frame it for her. Then she decided that a similar composition would be just the thing to balance the room so I made her another composition using one of her own hibiscus shots. This version is optimized to use as wallpaper with icons on the left.

Hi Phil
Thanks for your comments, like what you did with the scene, I too am just learning to use manipulation and this took several attempts to get the result you see on here.
I cant remember everything that I did to get the result......must start writing things down. But here are some of the techniques used........
Software ....PSP 9
Crop, denoise quite heavily, to get a soft effect.
Levels, brightness and contrast
Lighting effects.....used fill flash,
and the spotlight effect in PSP .....these were used to light the bird.
Oil brush to paint back some of the detail in the bird.
and just generally playing with the various effects available in the software until I got the overall effect that you see here.
I was quite amazed at the finished result and printed on a high gloss pro photo paper it looks quite good.
Have a great Christmas.

Not entirely a flower, more like a bunch of green leaves with a group of magenta leaves in the center. Or a cabbage gone nuts. :)
A radial gradation filter with the colors unchanged.

This is my first post here and i've not had my camera long so go easy on me. I took this with my Sony DSC-H1, then just reduced the saturation on the background i think it looks kinda cool. What do you think?

I used one of Val's tips. The flood filter is pretty cool to play with.
Basically, just squeezed the histogram before converting from RAW to tiff, convert to 8 bit, applied flood filter, painted layer mask to let trees show, resized for web.

For this picture I used a photograph of a rock formation on the shores of Capri - an island in the Mediteranean Sea. To create this picture I did the following things:
- I made the whites a bit more red using selective colour
- I made the rocks black using replace colour and the burn tool
- I created seperate layers for the air, rocks and water
- The air I made even more red and afterwards I posterized it.
- I used the channel mixer to change the colour of the water.
- I used the sponge tool to make the water more saturated on some places, to reflect the red/orange sky.
- I flattened the image.
- I used the liquify filter to create more bizarre rock formations and to create more interesting edges in the sky.
I may have left something out, because I can no longer remember every step I took.

Here's three random ones from my "collection".
First one is two shots (of me) merged in Photoshop.
Second is Swiss Guards from the Vatican run through Virtual Painter 5
and Third is the lights from a "Twister" Fairground ride, with a bit of playing about with from Nik Colour Efex filters.
Thats presuming I uploaded them in the order I think I did :D
