Budget: 400-600 (less is better then more I'm a student)
Size: not overly important slightly smaller is better
Features: fast picture taking i.e. short lag time between photos taken (Canons DIGIC II image processor speed seems fairly close to what I would like) or burst type more the former. Image stabilization sounds like a nice option, especially when I use zoom as I usually don’t have a tripod.
How many megapixels will suffice for you? I wont print over 8x10 and usually don’t crop to mush, so maybe 5-7megapixels.
* What optical zoom will you need? Ultrazoom = 10x-12x would be ideal or at least 4x
* How important is “image quality” to you? 9 or 10
Do you care for manual controls? I am quite basic right now but I want something I will grow into as a photography hobbyist. Most important if some kind of manually focus is available, so its not just what's in the center of the frame I like off center photos and the like.
General Usage: What and where I shoot: my pictures are largely of two sorts firstly outdoor landscape, portraits, and buildings (usual vacation type fair), something that won’t die in hot or cold locations (robust). Secondly dark indoor shots at parties, concerts ect. If I have to lean to a direction of style it would be more to the first type I described. Again prints no larger then 8x10, and will most often be viewed on computer and shared on DVD. I don’t shoot many action shots unless it’s an animal running from me.
Miscellaneous
Are there particular brands you like or hate? I'd prefer not to use Sony
Are there particular models you already have in mind? Canon A620 A610, I was looking at the A520 but would pay more for the faster processor allow in the 6 series. I have also been looking at the Canon PS S2. I'm kind of torn if the zoom is worth the extra money... or are there other better fetures.
other options or add-ons - Image Stabilization, Weatherproof (if possible I often shoot in Hot and Cold locations), Rotating LCD, fast processor, underwater case available (would be nice), some decent video perhaps.
I hope this gives good info to help me choose.
Thanks
Stephen
