Two more queries - can one fit a wide angle converter to the 28-135 canon lens?
can one fit a teleconverter to the 17-85 mm IS? or are there any third party stuff available? The reason I ask this is
1) I have a 17 -85 IS lens which is fairly wide but on the tele end I want at least 200 but I dont want to invest in a L lens now

2) or If I buy the 28-135 lens I need a wider angle as 28 becomes 44

thanks for all help

I may be completely wrong, but there's no such thing as a "wide" converter for SLR lenses like a 0.5x converter. Even if there were, only 3rd parties would be making those, and their compatibility would be questionable.

As for the other question, Canon has a full list of compatible lenses on its website. (You should bookmark this or save it to your computer!)

http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/pdf/spec.pdf

According to this sheet, the 17-85 is NOT compatible with either extender. In fact, most zooms aren't compatible. The only ones that are compatible are the 3 70-200's and the 100-400.

Thanks Rex. As matter of fact I did see canon's website, saw the same thing you mention, was hoping if there were other things that I did not know.
thanks again

Those add-on extenders and wide angle converters are for fix lens cameras where you can't swap out for a different purpose. One of the biggest benefits to having an SLR is the ability to change lenses based on purpose. Wide angle for wide, normal for normal and zoom for reaching far away subjects.
