Under 1000
Smaller is better, But looking for an SLR or a really good versitile compact
I want at least four or five
4+ Optical zoom
Image quality on a 1-10 sclae is a 8
Manual controls would be nice
To get into photography and hopefully have it last, for choosing college things, starting a portfolio, and lots of "people pics" with some landscapes. Just taking pictures of day to day aspects of my life.
Will not most likley be making big prints of my photos
I will be shooting hopefully a lot of lower light pictures
Action photos yes but not a TON
I want something fast, something i can take many shoots of and upgrade thorught the future. I want something that lasts and is classic. I want something that you can always rediscover..

Canon G6 is not exactly super compact and of course it's not a SLR but I think it's something that offers a lot of manual controls and good image quality.

with low light condition maybe you want to think about something with external flash capability... Panasonic Lumix FZ20? (since people say FZ30 doesn't do too well with low lights, although i think it will be better with flash)

think u can pick up several SLR models for under 1000
Minolta Maxxum/Dynax 5D for about $700-ish with kit lens
Canon Rebel XT for about 900-ish with kit lens

Try a Canon Digital Rebel XT or a Nikon D50. You will want to add on a do it all lens in your case. For both, you could go with the $400 Sigma 18-200mm. For Canon only, there's the $540 17-85 IS and for Nikon, there's the ultra nifty $700 18-200 VR (VR means Image Stabilization).
