I am going to buy a digital camera soon and have narrowed my search to these 2 cameras. Size is really a non factor. I really want a zoom, but would the 620 be sufficient for photographing back yard birds, distant cloud formations? The 620 "looks" to be more user friendly than the S2-IS, or with practice would I be happy with the S2? I just don't want to buy a camera that has it all, and not use those features.

if both models are similar, then it's down to the zoom. What type of photography is a 4x zoom and 12x zoom appropriate for?

What type of photography is a 4x zoom and 12x zoom appropriate for?Uhhh...let me think about that one...ummm...I know...12x for any type of photography that would require greater telephoto range...because the 12x zoom has 3 times the reach of the 4x zoom?
Oh yeah, one more feature difference...the S2 has a "Super Macro" mode that let's you focus as close as 0cm to your subject...but only at the the widest angle. Though it may sound cool, it's only minimumly useful. The A620 let's you get as close as 1cm in regular Macro Mode.

Well, one is professional, one is compact, one has zoom a 3 times stronger zoom than the other, one is 5MP the other is 7.1.
Kinda hard to compare these cameras as they are for different purposes.
I suggest you read some professional reviews about these cameras and that will maybe help you decide.
Canon PowerShot S2 IS (8 reviews) (http://www.viewscore.com/vsPP/3/1767)
Canon PowerShot A620 (2 reviews) (http://www.viewscore.com/vsPP/3/1797)
(if you have additional reviews you can recommend them there)
