Downloading photos with cable or card reader

I read that with Canons, you have to install the software they provide in order to download and view photos on your PC. Is that correct? Is it only true when using a cable? If your pc has a card reader, is the software not needed? Here is where I read it: http://tinyurl.com/7z3ev

If you're running Windows XP, then this is not true. Just connect the camera to the computer via the supplied USB cable and the camera shows up under My Computer like any other device...click on it and you can drag and drop the pictures to the directory of your choice...no need to install the software and no need for a card reader...
