View Full Version : In camera parameters affecting my RAW files before computer editing?

Today I noticed by looking at the LCD screen that my RAW files were affected by changing the parameters in exactly the same way as JPEG files are.
But I had learnt that there is no in camera processing applied to RAW files.
Have I got an error in my 350d or have I misunderstood something?
Thanks for any help

So how do you figure that the camera can display your RAW files unless it can somehow process them (using the same information it would use to produce JPEG files).
RAW images are transferred with the camera settings information to be processed by a RAW processor. The RAW files you transfer have not been processed, but in order to view them initially they have to be processed with the camera setting information.
RAW processors (like RSE, PSCS, and etc.) also use camera profiles, with in-camera settings, to display the initial images, as you took them (settings and all). It's then up to you how you would like to change/process them.
If camera settings were not included then the image would not reflect what settings you had when you took the picture, and reviewing them on your LCD would be useless.

Ah ok, thanks for explaining that ;) I think I understand.
Just a little question though: If I have the sharpening setting to +2 then when imported into RSE, will ticking the apply no sharpening box actually reduce the sharpening so I have an unsharpened image for processing in PSE?
Or will this mean no extra sharpening is done on top of the previous +2 setting so I actually the image will not be totally unsharpened.
Thanks again for explaining :)

The RAW image shouldn't have any sharpening applied regardless of Parameter.
Your choice of RAW converter would normally just interpret the metadata in the Tag to display your initial in-camera preferences.
