I bought a Rebtl XT several weeks ago, and just yesterday tried to shoot in black and white. I followed the manual directions for stetting B&W in the paramaters part of the menu, and set the red filter option. Both in the view window and the LCD display I saw the B/W icon. The pictures I took appeared as black and white in the LCD display. However, when I downloaded them to my computer and viewd them in the Canon DPP program, they appear as color. Did I miss a step someplace?

Sounds wierd. But I dunno...I've never shot in B&W. I figure I can always convert it to B&W later if I want and yet maintain the color option.

Sorry this post wasn't actually helpful!

When you shoot in RAW, the colour information of the sensor remains. You can turn your photos into B/W with DDP or any other photo editor. If you want to shoot photos in B/W without having to convert them to B/W, you have to shoot JPEG.

Thanks for the information. Next question: Is there any picture quality advantage of shooting with the B/W setting, since the color rendition of the RAW files must be converted to B&W? Or, should I simply shoot with the color settings and convert to B&W with, say Photoshop?

I am not sure, but I am guessing the red filter will take effect while shooting jpeg, so then it would not make a difference...

I tried the in-camera B&W deal a few times and didn't like the results at all. Now all my monochrome images are done converting from color in the computer.

I don't think so. I prefer to shoot in color and then with PS convert to monochrome. You have way more control on how the photo looks and the option to add filters like the red one . . . You can even make custom color filters to apply to your photos.

I found out from Canon that photos taken B/W in RAW convert back to color in Canon DPP software. This seems strage to me. Allegedly, the RAW file if opened in PS will be B/W. My problem is that I have PS5.5, and must convert my RAW files to TIFF to be able to open them in PS. Obviously, when converted to TIFF in Canon DPP, the pictures keep their color. Following most opinions, I guess I need to upgrade my software, shoot in color and make any conversions to B/W in the software.
