Hello everyone!

Does anyone know if Canon or any other manufacturer for that matter is coming up with a response to the Sony DSC-R1? The fact that such a camera is already feasible makes me so excited about the future of this particular segment of the prosumer market. :D

I think it's called the the 350D/Rebel XT! :D

Its really surprising the R1 image results are not better.

Movie mode, less moving parts (mirror), less dust potential, less noise (click sound), and buyer simplicity are the meaningful advantages I can think of.

One would suppose that without the engineering problems the mirror brings, more electronic (and maybe lense) breakthroughs will become feasible.

Speaking of futuristic electronic advances: I would like to see an IS system that is entirely electronic, done with sampling of selected image points. That would enable its combination with a mechanical lense based IS. Not much good at short focal lengths, but for super telephoto, just imagine handholding 500mm at 1/30th and getting the same results as 50mm at 1/30th! It could be smart enough to forgive some motion at the slower speeds, and of course be disabled if you want to show motion.

Just taking the opportunity to dream:) :) :) .

So far though; SLR seems in no threat of being replaced. Particularly when you consider the market forces involved.

Or, 380mm @ 1/15? (FZ10, handheld)

"Now Johnny, you been to the future have you? Told you not to play with your time machine. These Earthlings can't handle it!"

Real nice John. Now, coupled with DSLR low light performance and an L lense, then going down to 1/30th (or even 1/15th), and I think its what we're talking about!

It got me to thinking (dreaming) again, an image based "IS" system could actually freeze motion too. It would "bit shift" stuff to simulate faster shutter speeds. Anyway, an engineer would laugh himself silly at the prospect, a little like propetual motion. However; it would have to be feasible. A larger body say, with a mirror splitting the image to multiple sensors ... Yes, I think getting rid of the flipping mirror could introduce possibilities that could one day surpass what SLR couldn't even dream of.

Esoteric dribble for now.
