Hi,
I am going to purchase a new digital camera. I now own and use a automatic focus Canon PowerShot s10 digital camera. For better pictures, better picture selection, and more creative digital photos I would like to step up to better camera. I am considering a Canon Digital Rebel or a Canon EOS 20D. The price is not a issue between these two cameras. Any suggestions on which one to buy? The reviews on both camers were great, so a decision is to be made. I would like to do from macro, wide angle, telephoto and everything in between photography. Just take cool pictures of everything I find interesting. Next, I have had people tell me that the Canon EFS 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens is a good carry around all purpose lens that does a fine job in all of the areas I mentioned above. Is that true? Or, would you suggest another lens? Price is a issue here.
Thirdly, I recently have retired and plan to take a lot of pictures. Plus, I plan to travel and take pitures, take pictures of family, and take pitures of everything and anything I find interesting(nature, weddings, hummingbirds, birds, wildlife, landscape, museum pieces, arhitecture, night skies, star constellations, etc). Since the camera I have is quite different from the camera I am going to buy, I would like to learn about the camera and taking digital photographs. About the lenses, f stops, exposure, ISO, flash, low light, etc, etc, and etc. Could someone recommend some books, articles or a series of books that I could buy to teach me about my camera, lenses, printing, and digital photography? I would appreciate it. I know there are thousands, maybe millions of books on these subjects. But, like everything else, some are better than others. There are classic or "got to have" basic books out there. I would value your recommendations. I first want to learn the basics about everthing and then the more creative aspects of digital photography. I'm sure you all have determined I'm new to this, so take it easy on me.

Thanks in advance

I bought a Rebet XT several weeks ago. Like you, I am just getting into digital photography, and like you, I have just retired and travel much, and want to take pictures. Last week I bought "Pro Digital Photographer's Handbook," by MIchael Freeman. It covers much technical information in an understandable way -- information that comes up in a variety of contexts when reading instruction manuals, forums, etc.
