Normally I try to avoid movement of lights in a night shot - but you have
given me new ideas - these almost seem to dance in some of the shots.
Nice idea!

Canon 20D, Sigma 18-125 w/ Tripod
Low/Medium ISO (200 - 400)
Medium to High f/Stop (7-10)
Manual Focus Set to Infinity
Shutter set to bulb
As soon as I heard the first bang (rocket being launched) I open the shutter, when the firework has popped and almost burner out you close the shutter. Some minor cropping to center the shot and you are done.
Hope this helps,

Ken
Fz5_newbie Thanks! No don't think it puts yours to shame - mine just had a whole load more lights in it so that actually made it an easier shot to take.
ktixx / Ken
Actually not a tripod!!
It's taken at the top of the Stratosphere tower LA on my trip earlier this year
with my Son & his school mates.
A-200 with antishake. I took several actually - I wedged the camera up against the framework of the windows. After a couple I noticed a strange sideways blur. It turns out the whole building was swaying side to side
about 2 feet - they closed the upstairs down shortly after (evacuated us all!!)
So - I watched the movement and waited for the direction change point.
Then, with the camera firmly wedged, I took a slow exposure.
I could look up the exact details if you really want - but I am at work at the moment.
The other thing I find with any shots like this is they invariably need to be
under exposed to look realistic.
Hope that helps

I like the pictures, however if you have the chance to do re-shoot this photo I would suggest a lower ISO and a higher f/stop. I think the long exposure that you did was a good idea (for the car lights) however the streetlights really overexpose the shot.
Just a thought...

Geoff you are really making me regret the decision not to walk all the way down the strip to take the trip up to the top of the Stratosphere when we were in Vegas earlier in the year. These shots are excellent. Did you have to take them through glass?
Phill D
11-12-2005, 12:27 AM
Suplementary question Geoff, what settings did you use for these shots? I looked at the data on your image & the settings info wasn't there for some reason. Did you take it off or is it a function of image editing?
Geoff Chandler
11-12-2005, 02:49 AM
Phil - the moment I resize or rotate I loose all the exif info - I have no idea
how to prevent it.
I did keep an orig set from each camera though - although I won't keep them forever as it's a lot of space
OK - so the first one from the Stratoshpere that I posted was: -
A-200, 0.77 sec, f3.2, 100 ISO, -0.7 ev 50mm equiv - yes, through glass and wedged against the window frame.
The second was virtually the same apperture 2.8 and 32mm quiv- though I took out a little of the yellow on that one (and framed it)
I could e-mail you the orig pix if you like

Still learning how to take night shots. Here are my first ones. The wind was blowing hard and I had too high of an Iso (800 ) so its a little blurry and noisy. I also notice that the further away I am from the subject, the more atmospheric haze. Is there a filter or lens or method I can try using to sharpen and make the pictures better ? Feedback is very much appreciated! Thank you.

Here is my attempt at the Vegas Strip. D70s Nikkor 50mm 1.8 The pictures look pretty sharp in RSE2006 but when I convert them at highest setting to JPEG they are just simply loosing their sharpness. Its a real letdown! Also- FYI- security does NOT allow tripods up on top of the Stratosphere- and it was well needed. I was so upset. Anyhow, here is the results. My skill with my night shooting needs much improvement, so feedback is much appreciated. Thanks.

I fully understand how difficult you will have found it. You have managed superbly without a tripod - did you wedge yourself and the camera - or could you get away with a higher ISO??
My personal choice (as you will have seen) is to under expose a little more - but that's purely personal interpretation from how I wanted my own shot.
Well done.

These shots were taken at ISO 200. On top of the Strat they have those quarter operated binoculars , which convienently happened to be flat on the top. So I set my timer and let it shoot while not touching the camera. Any shot longer than 3 seconds comes out blurry because of the dadgum rides at the top shaking the whole structure. Next time I will try underexposing.

One car, two light traces and I have no idea why I do not see any faint car trace (since the shutter speed was not soooo slow). I even can not make out which direction the car is driving to... My guess is from right to left.
The pic was handheld so it is not super sharp.

A "normal" image is around 800x600 pixels. Obviously this size is not good if you ar trying to make a print, but it is more than good enough quality to share your photo's. Please go to where your photo's are shared (tinypic.com) and change the size of your pictures. There will probably be a way to resize w/o having to upload them again; If not, just resize them on your computer and re-upload them.

not sure if you meant that he DID use a star filter or if it just looks like it, but street lights just turn out looking like that with small apertures.

04-05-2006, 01:11 AM
Thanks. I used a small apperture (though f/10 is really not that small when considering it can go up to f/22) to be able to use a long exposure. If your apperture is smaller, less light will enter your lens, so you can expose longer. I wanted a long exposure time to make sure that the car would leave a nice trail.
By the way, making pictures with your camera on a tripod by the side of the road is quite some fun here in the Netherlands. Around here the police is always checking on speeding and not wearing seatbelts using cameras. So when you stand by the side of the road and someone drives by they suddenly slow down and put on their safety belt ;).
Here's one with a car driving into the opposite direction:

I tried out very long exposures using the bulb-mode lately. This picture was the result of a 5 minute exposure (584,3 seconds actually) at f/22. I already posted this picture elsewhere in the forums, but this one, unlike the first, does have some post processing applied and looks in my opinion better.

 Wow. Five minutes Prospero. That's a Very long exposure alright. Did you have a remote or did you hold the shutter that long and Try to keep it still as possible?
Here's one I took at the entrance of my apartments.
I suddenly realise, my math is off horribly :o, It's not 5 minutes, but close to ten...
I didn't have a remote, but instead I just used a piece of elastic to keep the shutter pressed down. In such long exposures it's just as effective (after all, the vibrations that you get are minimal in comparison to the full length of the exposure), and at no cost ;).
I tried to do one like that of the sky yesterday in the hope that all the stars would show up. That was a bit of a disappointment. The starlight was not bright enough and in the exposure I did then (15 minutes) the stars moved quite a long way, so instead of bright stars I had faint lines. I'll try to do that again sometime, but then with a larger apperture.
By the way, nice picture Brian.

I like the fog shot too Victor well done. I've been trying to get one myself recently but haven't been able to get anything worth posting yet.
Chris that gallery is excellent they are really nice shots of a pretty spectacular location. I'm not suprised you are making money out of your photography.

Down in the spring woods with a fire and looking up at the stars. Fire was burned down to mostly glowing embers. The 1 minute exposure did funny things with the intense red light of the fire. I first tried to tone down the red, but it looked odd and just left it the way it was. CC welcome.

Well... I was never really fond of this one, out of the others I took that night. A couple of days ago I seen a postcard with just about the exact same shot as mine and I thought to myself, "damn... my shot is way better than that one and mine should be on that card." So I decided to edit it a bit to look some what like a postcard.

Thanks. Nikon D200 & Nikkor 17-55mm. The lens is nice, but somewhat expensive. If I were where you are right now, I'd be shooting more of those skyline photos, as well as some zoo photos, just to try out the lens even more (I just picked it for myself as a Xmas present). Thanks again.

Beautifully shot, TNB. I can understand why you would not want your photo stolen, using a watermark, but for enjoyment purposes it is very distracting - plus you have it twice. Of the two, I'd use the one on the bottom right.
btw, steady hands! Shot is so sharp.
Thanks. The 17-55mm F/2.8 I used takes very nice photos.
Once the photos are uploaded to my website, they only have a watermark in the lower corner. However, the photos are slightly smaller in size and the right-click save doesn't work to copy the photos. When posting the larger photos I tend to use more than one mark, especially since I have had photos used without my permission on commercial websites. In those cases, the "thieves" usually try to put something over the mark (like another mark) or cut that portion of the photo off. Consequently, the reason for the more distracting second mark on my larger photos.

Thanks. The lights were actually attached to the remote control helicopter. In the first photo, the heli was flying a lot faster and in the latter photo, it was landing. I took the shots handheld using a Nikon D200 with a Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8 VR attached. The first shot was taken at .3s while the second was at 1/5s.

Lilchilichoco, welcome to the forum. I like your shots, especially the last "self-portrait" you have in the other thread. Did you enjoy taking your night shots? I like night shots, but sub-zero temperatures (F) have kept me away lately.
Sometimes comments are scarce around here ... it might help if you post what type of camera, lens, settings, etc. you used. You might also want to try creating your own thread for your shots, or posting in the manufacturer forum for your camera. But have fun taking pictures!

Hi AdamW
Yeah the first two shots were taken from the upper most deck of the Top of the Rock. That was my first time being there. It is way better than the lower two decks because there are glasses on the way so I can't get a decent shot without the reflection. The only problem was, the wind really picked up and the wind chill dramatically fell so I couldn't take a good shot of the other side of Manhattan  . But definitely in spring/summer time I'll go back to take more pics, including day shots :D
I noticed your located in SF. I'm going there next month to visit my gf. Well, I'm not the expert here, so you may want to ask other people too. But I think that as long as your subjects are holding still (subjects such as buildings, lakes, etc.) a P&S with manual controls would be okay. You need to be able to control the aperture and shutter speed, and the camera needs to have a tripod mount.
A P&S would not work well in low-light situations where your subjects are moving, such as at a concert or party (unless you want to use flash.)
You are being very creative with the subjects of your photos, and you're not letting your camera phone hold you back. I admire your tenacity! In your "Things" post, I liked the "Leftover" shot and the second "Back Home" shot the most, because of the lighting. Your shots of the mosque were impressive for a camera phone. You are really using it to the best of its ability. I hope you can get a "real" camera soon and develop your talent!

Well, you can look at my gallery (in my sig) and see where I've taken pictures from, but let's see. The top of Twin Peaks is of course a popular tourist site, with amazing 360 degree views. I love the views from Bernal Hill. Also, along the Embarcadero there are nice views of the Bay Bridge, the baseball stadium, the Bay, the Ferry Building, the East Bay, etc. Golden Gate Park is nice, especially the Conservatory of Flowers and the Arboretum. I spend a lot of time in the Mission District, I lived there for years and now live next to it, and there are nice views nearby from Noe Valley, and Dolores Park is cool. The Marin Headlands (the northern anchorage of the GG Bridge) is great, as is Fort Point and the Crissy Field at the SF side of the Bridge.
With all the hills, there are many opportunities for views. Also many neighborhoods have beautifully painted victorians. I'll pass on any more ideas I have as I think of them.
I'd love to know what you you think of my gallery.

That leaves the Pentax which has both Is and good ISO performance. There is also the sensor cleaner in the Sony and Canon XTI....what in your opinion would get me the shots I want?

I'll make sure to look for those spots you suggested. There was this one show on MTV that was in SF. It was somewhere in the mountains area (I'm not sure since they showed it during the night) and the view was spectacular - it might be the SF skyline at night. Sorry, my description is a little vague :o , but one of the spots you suggested might be the one I'm talking about.
I'd love to know what you you think of my gallery.
You have amazing shots! I love the Chrysler Building reflection off another building. It may seem like a simple shot, but I think it's an excellent composition. Thanks, 500! I really like the Chrysler shot too. It was born of frustration. I've always loved that building, and when I was in NY I went there to shoot it. Of course, I didn't think about the fact that it would be difficult--to say the least--to do so standing on the sidewalk in front. So in frustration I leaned against the building, happened to look across the street, and saw that great reflection.
The MTV show you mention might be an early season of Real World, wheich was shot in SF. I think the "mountains" you refer to were just the city's hills filmed artistically. The house they lived in is in the Haight-Ashbury district (which also has a lot of great victorians.) You know, where all the action was back in the hippy days. Now of course, houses there never sell for less than $750,000 (if you're very lucky.) It's also where Amoeba Music is--the best record store in the world (and where one of my kids works!)

First let me remind you that I am no expert! I've had a camera for less than a year. I've never used image stabilization or sensor cleaner, and I'm not familiar with Pentax at all.
I think for night shots, image stabilization would be most helpful when you are not able to use a tripod, and/or you need a short shutter speed (such as when photographing people.) So for subjects such as your mosque at night, I do not think the image stabilization would help (but again, please ask an expert.)
But the best advice I have for you is to go to the store. Is that possible? Play with all of the cameras you are considering. They are ALL good cameras. So an important deciding factor is how it feels in your hands. Your "gut" feeling about it. And don't stress out too much. No matter what camera you get, it will be great and you will love it.
Edit: I just found this poll, looks like it's exactly the info you need. And not the same as what I had guessed :o http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28057&highlight=prime

my cam is in my signature......it's a phone cam. I do not own any camera at the moment and wish to invest in a really good Dslr..(read--- one which can let me do most of all I want to do with it with minimum issues, sub 1000$).
I want my cam to turn out excellent, noise free night shots, vibrant, not unnatural, colors in day outdoors and people shots, fabulous landscapes and steady, super clear macro.I am hoping to have large prints,so quality has to be good enuff for large prints. The lenses that I may invest in and tripod must enhance the capabilities of the camera, not substitute for lack thereof.

Yep, that was Roo :D I don't take too many pictures of my cats, though. Right now my favorites are night shots. I am in love with the colors they bring up. I also like sniping people. Now that I live in a (slightly) more populated area, I hope to get more.
PLEASE be sure to ask about IS for night shots from someone who has used it. When I read the thread I linked for you, it seemed to directly contradict my guesses. Sounds like if you use a tripod (which you need for any shot more than 1/60th sec or so) you don't need IS. But if you're trying to hand-hold, it is very helpful. Just don't take my word for it!

If you could wait a while and you aren't too particular about going DSLR right away, you could take a look at the Sony DSC H7 and H9. Should be in the market soon. They have some awesome features. Both are 8 MP with 15x optical zoom and IS. ISO 80 to ISO 3200. They support conversion lenses. Shutter speed upto 1/4000sec. Carl Zeiss Lens.
There's a comprehensive review at dpreview. If I could get someone to buy my H1, I would go for the H7. Though the H9 has infrared for night photography.

I think my confusion arises from not having owned a camera at all. Anyway....hope the weather's good in Wyoming.....there are country songs about it!!!.....wow!!......I think one by Trisha Yearwood..? I love snapping people too......but with a phone cam it isn't possible......
how many cats do you have?....
thanks again.......you've been very kind.

Lilchilichoco, if you're in Dubai, could you please find out the price of the DSC H7 and H9 over there. Would help if you could convert it to Indian Rupees. Thanks

You're welcome. I hope you can get your camera soon, and that you love it! I don't know that song, but the weather here can be very cold! Today the wind chill was zero F, and it felt pretty warm (!) it actually seems like spring. Just a windy spring. Doesn't help for taking pictures though :( I have two cats now, just got the 2nd kitty 3 weeks ago :D

Hi toriaj.....I love cats....but with a little cat of my own..aka my daughter....it's hard to keep one.:) I belong to the western state of India which is part of the Thar desert.......and it can be as hot as 50 deg celcius and as cold -5 deg celcius.
I love the desert....and Dubai has an amazing weather!! This is a summer child talking....others will tell u it's miserable sweltering heat all through:).....
Thanks for all your input.
Best regards
