I recently picked up a dimage z1, and although I've been pretty happy with the results, I'm having problems with macro shots. I take a lot of pics of herps and such, and the lighting is often less than ideal. Anyone here got any tips to correct this, other than sinking a few hundred into the macro flash setup?

I'm not sure exactly what your problem is, but try adjusting the flash strength. Check the owner's manual for instructions on how to do it. I have had similar problems where the flash is too strong and wipes out the subject and found that lowering the intensity of th flash helped. Or try turning on more lights so you don't need the flash. Or putting the subject near a stronger light so you don't need the flash. Adjust those lights and positioning of the subject to get the effect you want. Use more or less transparent cloths over the lamps, colored cloths, etc. Be imaginative. Creativity and ingenuity can save you a lot of mony and avoid purchase of needless or seldom-used equipment. Hope this helps.
