I was thinking it would be nice to see all the places people have visited and to see their photographic representation of the places they have been. Any monuments (IE: Acropolis, Pantheon, Eiffel Tower, Pyramids, Ect..) that you have photographed, lets see them!

in Berlin, not much surprise there. A shell after WW2, this majestic building was rebuilt post war. The tower in the background is the TV tower, another landmark of the city.

What a change Berlin has seen in recent years. Potsdamer Platz is completely transformed and the scars of a once-great city begin to heal over under the effects of a sea of cranes on the skyline

A very unpopular monument to Victor Emmanuel II of Italy in Rome. Much hated by Romans it's popuarly known as the typewriter and sits a few meters away from the best sites of ancient Rome. It looks better at night...

This is the Gedachtnis Kirche at the top of Kufurstendamm - the "main" street in what was once west Berlin. Left in a state of partial disrepair it is a memorial to WW2.

Hey I've been here (and have non-digital photos)! :)
When I was in High School I was in a Youth Wind Symphony that traveled to Europe. We played a piece of music called Smphony No. 1 (In Memoriam Dresden) (http://www.bukvichmusic.com/comp/symphonyno1/index.asp) by Daniel Bukvich. It is a really powerful piece about the bombing of Dresden. It was so moving to play it in the city.

It's not Nelson (he didn't wear a tricorn hat). There is a new statue of Nelson in Greenwich Park but it ain't your one. For Nelson see:

The statue in your picture is of General James Wolfe. He is famous for the attack on Quebec in 1759. Sorry French Canadians out there - but we won !

You're right Kushnirenko. These monuments are indeed a good caution for future generations. They reminded me of monuments I saw in Rome in the newest neighbourhood called EUR. Like those communist monuments they are least to say controversial. They have been build by Musolini, the Italian National Socialistleader during the Second World War. These monuments try to demonstrate what Musolini believed to be the superiority of the Italian race.

I think not we should judge a history. But she of us.

I partially agree with you there. We should indeed not spend to much time looking at history, but instead spend that time making sure that history will look favourably on us by doing something good whenever possible.

However, having a clear judgement of history may prevent us from making mistakes that have been made in the past. Also, if there's no one who looks back and judges there would be no history.

Well, that's enough philosophical stuff for one day ;). Here's another picture of a monument. Well, the remains of a monument would be more appropriate :).

I think I see your point. I don't know if they would put it on display. I think it would depend on the size (of the statue) :D. If this statue ever broke down, I don't think they would bother too much keeping the part you seem to be refering to :D.

Some very different monuments:

The first shot is of a temporary monument to summer and surf-lifesaving in Martin Place, Sydney, Australia
(the red & yellow flags in the flower bed are a symbol of the surf-lifesaving movement)
30201

The second is of the Cenotaph, Martin Place, a memorial to Australian servicemen and women who've died in war, particularly WWI & WWII.
30202

Third, a statue of Prince Albert, Prince-Consort/Husband of Queen Victoria.
(Albert's features were a little obscured in darkness in this high-contrast shot originally, so I raised the brightness and colour saturation levels a little and lowered the contrast a little to increase the visible details in the statue, in addition to resizing for posting).
30203

Finally, Queen Victoria. (The light was beginning to fail as dusk approached, so Victoria was also obscured in darkness especially against the dark background of the trees from Hyde Park North, so I applied the same post capture image processing as I did to Albert above).
30204

I hope the results were reasonably pleasing. :)

Monument enamoured. View 2. Kharkiv, Ukraine. Fuji FinePix S9500. Dec, 24, 2005

With the grafitti and MacDonalds, it could be here (California) except for the snow.

Although this marker says "Stovepipe Wells", and it is outside of the community of Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley, there is only one well. A stovepipe was stuck into the well to aid locating it when shifting sand began to cover it.

Ok given all the significant monuments you showcased here, this comment may be shallow ... but great sky on #1! Was that with your polarizer? :D
great shots by the way

Hi Tori,

Shallow comment? Not at all, I expect the main interest in any photo's posted to the Forums will be in their photographic merit, or otherwise, regardless of subject matter. :)

I have mixed feelings about the monuments I've photographed, on the one hand they're simply subjects I've photographed, on the other I'm fascinated by their power to communicate at all levels, especially emotional and symbolic, and how their imagery impacts those who view them...

If you mean the first post on this page, i.e. post# 111, actually no, I didn't use the polariser on that one. I took the photo before the posting date of 12FEB08 and I only bought the polariser on 17MAR08, a month later. :)

Glad you like the photo's though, most were taken within the first six months of my foray into digital photography, so it was still very early days.:p:o It is now some seven months since I started shooting digital and I'm beginning to see some improvement! :) Since Oct07, I realise now that I should've considered this a completely fresh and new start (any film shooting experience I had was so long ago as to be meaningless now and my childhood photography wasn't that good nor did I have that much film experience anyway). It was only my pride and arrogance that prevented me from accepting that I was starting from scratch all over again, thankfully I'm over that and can actually relax and really enjoy the learning process! :):D

cheers,
