There can be two problem. first is to check focus. did you see green light in upper right corner of LCD or EVF while shooting? Focus can take littile more time in indoor conditions. The other issue will be camera shake, in indoor light will be less so camera will go lower shutter speeds making difficult to hold steadier for longer period. Try to use flash (you did not mentioned whether u used or not), or increase amount of light a little bit. Try to go higher ISO settings.
Automode of this camera should work fine if not try to go, suitable scene modes.

I used the flash and i kept getting the red error message. I was trying to take pictures of my daughters dance rehearsal, playing with the camera for when the real thing comes and i couldnt get anything. What scene and how do you change the iso settings???? sorry im slightly stupid when it comes to technology...lol ty for your hely btw..

Red dot means focus and/or exposure is not OK.
Check first that if macro mode is not switch on by mistake. Disable macro or lanscape (infinite focus) modes and go to Auto and shoot.
