I ad an err99 appear midway through a day's shooting. I switched the camera off and then on and it vanished. No problem. What caused the error? I was using a Tamron 70-300 f4 at the time.

third party lenses can cause this problem. I have had it happen once only, on my 20D with the 50mm canon. I was stunned to have it happen. I took the lens off, took out the battery, cleaned the terminals, and put the battery and lens back on. It has yet to recur.

Err 99's are Canon's catch all code for an error that could be any number of things. Unfortunately, they seem to be par-for-the-course for Canon shooters. (read about this guy's problems with his Mark II's: http://www.planetneil.com/canon/reliability.html). I probably shoot more frames than most here (about 800 - 1000/wk per body), and have only had the Err 99 a couple of times. In each instance, turning the camera off dropping the battery out then re-inserting it solved the problem (though once I got the error because the battery was drained and I had to replace the battery to solve it...). Issue seems to be even more frequent with the 70-200 L IS...

I just got the err 99 last night. With my 50 1.8 - I took a shot, then as I went to take the next, it used a really long shutter speed, like the shutter hitched halfway through I looked at the screen err 99. I powered off, took out the memory card, reinserted memory card, powered on, it was fine for about 5 more shots then it did that hitch/shutter thing again, I checked out the screen, no error, haven't had anything happen since. I hope things work out for this weekend and I am not high and dry with a nice black paperweight.

Didn't read Jamison's article, but I have this vague recollection that err messages like that sometimes have to do with apeture blades sticking inside the lens? Also occurs when the lens contacts aren't making proper contact with the camera body.

My puzzlement stems from the fact that I never removed the lens from the camera. I took 100 photos without a problem then up popped the err99. Then after switching the camera off and then on, I took another 80 or so with the same lens - no problem.

Yeah when my first camera was damaged from its lens sides i repair it. The technician repair it with third party lenses. After some time i also face this vanished problem. Use always original brands and their parts.

You realize this thread is over 3 years old, right?;)

I tried a 5D MKII out at a photography show the a few weeks ago and it flashed a 99 error code at me. They had some crappy lens on it though.... I think it said 85mm 1.2??? or something like that.... anyway it seemed like a very cheap lens, it was so slow to focus! must have been a Sigma.
