Lots of you have bought a FZ10 or 20 Recently and are confused as to why to use another 62mm Adaptor/Filter and what extra lens to choose...

I compiled this FZ10-20.FAQ.txt in a zip.. to download
covering most aspects with links/pics that i used to choose my Adaptor/Lens..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

was offline sorry !
the whole text here
some links are dead and there more lens now...refer to the working links
this was intended for FZ10 / 20
I believe the 30 to be same specs

Adaptor info
============
What is an Adaptor ?
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/...PD62-ring-s.jpg
Remove the Pana ring..
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/...-ring-off-s.jpg
then add adaptor (Pemaraal PA62)
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/...0-PD62-on-s.jpg

So why use a 62mm Adaptor instead of the Pana 72mm Adaptor supplied ?

Nothing stopping you using the supplied Pana 72mm adaptor + 72mm filter
but a 72mm filter is more money.. and if you want to use any other lens at a later date most are 62mm or smaller threads this can cause vignetting (dark corners on images) and step down ring problems.. and the cost of..
so buying a 62mm adaptor + 62mm filter in the future makes sense.

PA62 is Aesthetically pleasing too

WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE PROTECT THAT LENS PLZ HAVE A UV FILTER IN PLACE..

Isn't a 62 mm filter a full centimeter smaller than the 72mm size that fits the FZ-20? Won't that cause vignetting at the corners?

Isn't a 62 mm filter a full centimeter smaller than the 72mm size that fits the FZ-20? Won't that cause vignetting at the corners?Nope. The actual lens diameter is much less than 72mm. The 72mm dimension comes from the lens hood threads, which are of larger diameter. I use a 55mm stepdown ring to accommodate my teleconvertor, and even that doesn't cause vignetting on my FZ10, nor does it on the FZ20 (I've tried one). :o :)

I saw this on stevesforums from a member there I decided to try out his adapter/lens hood combo, I ordered it today. I will let you know when I receive it, here is the link to the post:

http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=38263&forum_id=23

go down to Rezajune's posts he has pictures of these adapters. Here's his post:
This is what I would recommend.

Buy the Phayee FZ10/FZ20 Tube adapter from Ron Jin (China)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43441&item=3850204139&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Its an incredible product. Very Very high quality adapter.
It has a 62mm front thread, with an 72mm front threadextension adapter which you can add on a hood such as a hama.

I believe you pay what you get and since you only will buy only one pair of everything..might as well pay good money.

I suggest the 62mm Hoya Pro1 Super HMC Multi-coated UV-Haze filter. It will cost around 40 dollars on ebay.
This is also act as your lens protector. It is super slim only 1mm thin...and the ring is only 3mm thin. The thinner the better. Multi coating makes a big difference.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67353&item=3849440199&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Then I would get a high quality "linear" NOT "circular" polarizer. Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen, B&W make high quality ones. I got a high end polarizer, because that is one of the most..if not ..the most important lens you will carry around, and kept on the most time.

got the B&W Kaesemann Linear Polarizer for around 100$.
Like I said, you probably won't see the difference between the one I got and a 50$ filter. I just wanted this one, because its air tight and I may be going to extreme climates.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=10921&is=REG

Do get a hood. Very important. If you get the Phayee adapter tube from ron jin (jinfinance) then get this hood.

http://www.adorama.com/LNHZ72.html?searchinfo=72mm%20lens%20hood&item_no=1

Why? Because you can adjust the length of the hood based on what kind of photography you do..(macro versus tele)

I have bought from all these dealers and recommend them highly. Especially Ron Jin for the adapter tube. this is his email if you have any questions.

rongjin@phayee.com

I will post a picture of my setup soon.

wish you the best.

By the way, never ever get a 72mm filter on these cameras for the distance between the lens and the filter is too far, most converters such as the Tcon 17..B-Macro... B-300 are 55mm and you really can't step down from 72mm to 55mm. Not recommended. You want everything to be as close to the FZ10/20 as close as possible.

I hope I helped you out a little bit.

Hi FZ20knowitall posted from Steve's forum's:-

"Then I would get a high quality "linear" NOT "circular" polarizer. Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen, B&W make high quality ones. I got a high end polarizer, because that is one of the most..if not ..the most important lens you will carry around, and kept on the most time. "

Well I bought the rest of the set up recommended by the original poster: From Rong Jin, The Phayee adapter tube $22.5
kenko super pro 62mm multi-coated UV $27
DMW-BM7 replacement battery (7.2V, 680mAh) $19
72mm lens cap w/strap : $2.5
So now I'm after a polarizing filter.

On Ebay I've found something
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15217&item=3854383930&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

2 questions:
1. Where can you buy a reasonably priced and good quality spare batteryfor the FZ20 - no-one seems to stock any...

2. In these forums, what on earth does 'bump' mean, please? (I'm new to these things and remain largely mystified)

Bump = place this post at the top of the thread list so it can be seen easier and appear acitve. When a topic is not stickied (stuck to the top) and requires a reply or simply has useful information, people tend to use this method to give more visibility to a topic/post.

As for batteries, here's a few I know

Batteries.com (http://www.batteries.com)

Note: genece mentioned the eBay one to which I made a bid on - you can purchase outright for $13.95 or attempt to out bid me ;)

I will probably be purchasing a FZ20 in the next couple days, and am scouting out what accessories to get. I always thought that a circular polarizer was needed on cameras that have autofocus. What would be the reason for getting a linear polarizer? (I have done a lot of film photography - amature - but this is my first serious foray into digital photography.

Also - I have seen filter kits on ebay for 3 filters (polarizer, UV, FLD), wide angle, telephoto lense, for $114. Not that I need the two lenses, but is there a reason I should stay away from them?

Other than the fact that is a LOT  of money for 3 filters from E-Bay.

If you are going to buy from E-Bay make sure you lnow what brand is being sold and research if they are any good, also make sure you are buying from a reputable seller, preferablt a power seller or similar.

My FZ10 should be arriving in the mail on Monday. I'm pretty new to digital photography. I got a Fuji DX-10 when I was 14 (late '99) with 0.8 megapixels and a 32mb memory card, I never used it much. I was wondering what exactly does a ND filter do and what is a MC protector? I saw both of them on the Panasonic website. What's a lens adapter? I think allows a filter to be added to the lens? I'm a little bit confused about all of this. There is a lot to learn.

JavaDan
12-30-2004, 04:01 PM
An ND filter is a Neutral Density filter. It is used to reduce the amount of light. Here's an explanation: NF Filter (http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/filter/filter-ND.html)

An MC (Multi-Coated) filter is better known as a UV filter. It is used to filter out ultra-violet light - which for digital work is not a problem. It has no affect on exposure, so it's used mainly as a protector for your lens - which leads to the adapter. ...

In an SLR with removable lenses, a filter, such as the MC, can just be put on the end of the lens without a problem. The digital lens, however, is always moving to adjust for focal length. You cannot simply put a filter on the end of the lens barrel because the lens won't be able extend. That's what the adapter tube is for. The tube lets the filter (or lens attachment, etc) sit out away from the actual lens and allows the lens to move freely.

But anyway... i'm think about buying a UV and Polarizer filter. How much would this run me and where should i buy it? (Im a broke 17yrs old kid, money is a problem) Anything else I should buy for my camera? I already have a bag so thats no biggy. Thanks

So far I've purchased the first two items on rez's kist. currently shopping for a second batter now (leaning towards one on b&h along with the filter he recommends). Would love to see that file again though. I'm buying stuff and I don't even fully know what any of it does! :o

As usual, some great advice here.
So for my FZ10 & Phayee adaptor, I have the following choices (& issues):
The Minolta ACW-100 - need a further step down to 49mm - so vinegretting issues? Acceptable barrel distorion (from samples on http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/FZ-10/Converters/Lenses/WideAngle.html
Olympus WCON-08B - 50% heavier, a bit bulkier, but best in class on BD. No need for adapter, as will go straight onto my 62mm thread - so less chance of vinegretting.
Olympus WCON07 Best for size, far lighter - but seemingly significant BD. Does the BD occur because it is 24mm equiv, compared to the other 2 being 28mm? If I rein this in (through a partial zoom), will the BD go back to the same scale as the other two, so this then 'wins', on size/weight?

A quick look at ebay prices these at around 90, 50, 50. So if my hypothesis on the WCON07 works, then it seem the best all round VFM.

Anyone have experiance of having these 3 in their hands to do the real test - what they deliver to you?

Pete

btw
FZ1, 2, 3,15, cant take extra lens.

I am still trying to decide if I want the 15 or 20. What do you mean the 15 won't take an extra lens?

I thought the two cameras bodies were physically identical.
Same here! I can't decide between the FZ10 or FZ20!

Lots of you have bought a FZ10 or 20 Recently and are confused as to why to use another 62mm Adaptor/Filter and what extra lens to choose...

I compiled this FZ10-20.FAQ.txt in a zip.. to download
covering most aspects with links/pics that i used to choose my Adaptor/Lens..
it wont tell you what to buy, but by looking here you will have a better idea :)

Adaptor info
============
What is an Adaptor ?
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/FZ-10/Converters/PD62-ring-s.jpg
Remove the Pana ring..
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/FZ-10/Converters/FZ-10-ring-off-s.jpg
then add adaptor (Pemaraal PA62)
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/FORUM/FZ-10/Converters/FZ-10-PD62-on-s.jpg

So why use a 62mm Adaptor instead of the Pana 72mm Adaptor supplied ?

Nothing stopping you using the supplied Pana 72mm adaptor + 72mm filter
but a 72mm filter is more money.. and if you want to use any other lens at a later date most are 62mm or smaller threads this can cause vignetting (dark corners on images) and step down ring problems.. and the cost of..
so buying a 62mm adaptor + 62mm filter in the future makes sense.

PA62 is Aesthetically pleasing too :)

WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE PROTECT THAT LENS PLZ HAVE A UV FILTER IN PLACE..

I thought the two cameras bodies were physically identical.
In order to mount lenses and smaller size filters on the FZ10,15 and 20, a third party adapter is required. The bodies on all three camera are not identical but the same adapter will fit all three. Check out "CRing JKC" and Phayee on eBAy.
