I purchased a Hoya Ultra UV (O) Multi-coated filter today. I have been wanting to buy a lens protector of some kind for my lens as it is nearly $700 but was wonder what the UV portion of this device really does. I have been taking some sample shot with and without the filter today and see no difference.

Is the UV portion of this protection just a silly scam to juice the price up, also they had protectors ranging from cheap non multi-coated to mine ($50). I have always had the rule, buy the most expensive and you will never have to buy it again, but was just wondering if this was a waste.

Also.... On my list is a good polerizer. I was looking at the same brand, their top of the line super thin multicoated was $110.

Not sure what the sensitivity is to UV on a DSLR's imaging sensor, but when used on a film camera reduces or eliminates a blueish cast that UV (ultraviolet) can cause. I've got them on most all my lenses basically for protection.

Here's what looks like an interesting link. I browsed through it and it may have a more in depth look at UV filters.
