Negative Scanners

I am looking for a good negative scanner that is also a good flat bed scanner or that can scan prints. I have years of pictures to digitize (now that seems like an antiquated word) and I am in the market for a new scanner. Any suggestions?

My personal bias is that negatives or transparencies on a flatbed scanner will never give you results as good as a dedicated film scanner. But I have to confess I haven't tried any flatbeds lately.

I got (and still get) great results with my Nikon Coolscan III film scanner. The current equivalent model is the Coolscan V ED, which sells for about $600.
